Ancient Nautical Folklore is at the Heart of The Jonah Collector

Remember Jonah from the Bible? Jonah in the New Testament was sent on a mission by his god, but he is hesitant. As a result, Jonah was swallowed by a large whale (sea creature), but then spat out. After his journey into the belly of the beast (Hero's Journey), he returned to his original calling, to deliver god's judgement to an ancient city.

This narrative correlates to the Hero's Journey. When the hero entered the unknown world, he was undergoing a transformation from who he was to who he will be. He is tested. Once he was victorious over his foe, or circumstances, the hero could bring the life-saving elixir to the world.

Over time, the symbol of Jonah morphed into meaning the weakest link and bad luck to a sailing crew. This switch to a dark definition of Jonah was emphasized on the paranormal show, The Holzer Files: Phantom Crew of Season 1, Episode 5.

The team investigates the ghost ship USS Constellation and tries to find the source of its endless spirit sightings over the centuries. They may have gotten more than they bargained for when one investigator realises he's been bitten out of nowhere.
Here's a snippet of that case:

The paranormal team soon learned that the entire non-living crew targets a living person as a weak person to be labeled their Jonah. That gave the ghosts the right to push anyone off the USS Constellation as they so choose.

The Jonah Collector is much more than literary, lyrical prose, but a chance to see the real life drama of sailors in an easily digestible form. Instead of using an evil captain and crew, this paranormal-nautical story surrounds a dark mermaid, who collects the souls of sailors, namely Jonahs. The rhyme scheme of the prose pieces adds intensity to the drama.

_____

About The Jonah Collector

In this epic tale, we discover that in his youth, Captain Christopher Houston was once a Jonah. The weakest link on a ship endangers the entire crew. As such, he was tossed into the Locker, then saved by a mermaid. She wants revenge on him for annulling the contract. She went after his son. Now, Houston has a choice: save his son or himself. Will he be the next victim of The Jonah Collector?

Life is tough when you are the weakest link.

Movie Review: Submergence is a Modern Retelling of Romeo and Juliet with an Equally Modern Message

Granted, there are no feuding families over the characters Danny Flinders and James More, but the star-crossed lovers are still archetypes of this romance-tragedy genre.

Contrary to popular belief, the genre was not begun by William Shakespeare. These stories persisted over centuries before he wrote his play and culminated in tales such as the Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke (1562) as well as Palace of Pleasure by William Painter (1567). Decades later, Shakespeare restructured these narratives into his famous poetic play.

*****

Submergence

In a room with no windows on the eastern coast of Africa, a Scotsman, James More, is held captive by jihadist fighters. Thousands of miles away in the Greenland Sea, Danielle Flinders prepares to dive in a submersible to the ocean floor. In their confines they are drawn back to the Christmas of the previous year, where a chance encounter on a beach in France led to an intense and enduring romance.

IMDB

 *****Spoiler Time*****

The Breakdown

Submergence is about a man and woman who meet on vacation in France. Both waiting to go on their own professional adventures. Both unknowing of the consequence to ensue.

James More, played by James McAvoy, is a British intelligence operative. He has discovered a link between Kismayo, Somalia and an operational bomb unit in Europe. He makes the decision to return to the area under his water engineer alias. As soon as he arrives, he is taken hostage and tortured as a CIA/MI6 spy. Later, as the movie progresses, James More discovers that a couple of militant leaders of jihadists have taken command and control of the operation. In order to save his love and homeland, James activates a location device hidden in a tooth (bridge). An American strike team is sent to eliminate the threat. James dies at the scene.

Danielle "Danny" Flinders is a bio-mathmetician, played by Alicia Vikander, who gathers samples from the Hadal layer of the mantel near the bottom of the ocean. She has trained to ride in a submersible for a chance of a lifetime: go to the depths for herself. She knows the risks yet is spurred on by the fact that her hypothesis of life being from the scum of the ocean floor has merit and must be taken seriously. However, the submersible has mechanical and technical issues, leaving the crew and herself stranded. With only five days of oxygen for them to breathe, the hope of a rescue is shattered as Danny is in the only one found in Europe. She dies of suffocation.

*****

The Review

James More: "Death. It gets very real when you're watching somebody die in front of you. You're thinking, is this all I am? Is this all I added up to? And all the clichés are true. You're thinking, why now? Why did it have to be... this happen, before I realize what life truly is? It's direct, it's immediate, and it's their whole life exposed to you."

This movie allows the characters in their most vulnerable and desperate hours to console themselves with the love the two of them shared and continue to lament. The story is a cautionary tale to those people who watch and understand the message: life is too short; take love when you can get it and never let it go.

James More and Danny Flinders allowed their compulsion to work at any cost to cost them their enduring love to one another and also their lives.

Was their sacrifices worth it in the end?

Is this not a modern conundrum? Work to get ahead but to do so is to miss out on living a good life?

There are some good points the characters make while falling in love with each other. What is death? Is this life of what we become the only thing we have amounted to? What is the life you want to live? Then why aren't you living your best life?

To sacrifice yourself in the name of service or profession, is that not a disservice to humanity? To yourself? What is too much to ask of someone?

This film has been rated: 5.4/10 Stars on IMDB.

The one consolation that the audience is given is after James More's death in the ocean, Danny Flinders is there to greet him on the other side. Star-crossed, yes, these two characters are, but James and Danny are afforded an ending Romeo and Juliet never received: an eternity in love with one another.

What could any hopeless romantic ask for?

Watched free on IMDB.

*****

The Tally

My review will be posted on Prime as well as IMDB.

Prime... 4 out of 5 stars

IMDB... 8 out of 10 stars

Submergence gives us many questions to ponder about the balance in our lives and the worth we place on every waking hour. Is love or work more important? Maybe we should ask ourselves these types of questions.

If we want a better world, then isn't it up to every single individual to live a better life that creates a better outcome than violence, hate, and criminality?

The hero's journey... be on it.

Let love guide your path.

December 23rd: Today is the Last, Last Day of Your... Death?

You are living mythology and you don't even know you are doing it.

Religions of the past and their current manifestations tell of a man born of a virgin who died and was resurrected.

Mythology is why solstices are a little more exciting than equinoxes. Solstices are like we hit the edge (Earth's wobble) and at the last possible second, we are saved by someone yanking on our shirt collar.

The mythical aspects of this time of year, winter, is special too. Humans are connected to our Earth cycles from biology to religion. We are now in our death cycle. We will be in the winter season for 88 days and then spring will resurrect us.

For the mythology and literary aspects, December 21 of Winter Solstice is our annual death day. As religion mimics the natural cycles, the sun stays nearly unchanged in the sky for the next three days. That means December 22th, 23rd, 24th are our mythological death. We are Persephone.

So on December 25th, the sun in the sky begins to move upward once again. That is how the ancient people knew that the Earth cycle was now on its way back to spring time, thus the resurrection. In a few days, everyone on Earth will be resurrected as was the sun gods of ole.

You are living mythology. You are living your death and will be resurrected. So how does it feel to be a sun god?

Isn't mythology grand?

Now how can you use mythology in your writing (literature)?

Hint: research Dionysus, Persephone, Osiris, Odin, Ganesha, Lemminkainen, Tammuz, Krishna, Quetzalcoatl, Attis...

Then how can you use these gods' qualities in your character(s)? plot?

Have a great and wonderful day.

Fearless Workshop: Love and the Goddess

"This is a prime myth in this period of the Goddess as the redeemer, the one who goes in quest of the lost spouse or lover, and through her loyalty and descent into the realm of death, recovers him."

The myth of the goddess spans the length of human history. Joseph Campbell's The Power of Myth delves into the importance of goddess mythology in the different cultures around the world.

So how do you use the power of the goddess in your writing?

In Undawnted's Autumn Cider Seasonal Reads, our Fearless Workshop is Lectures for Writers: The Power of Myth- Love and the Goddess. This writing exercise will help you on your way to using the goddess mythology in your writing.

Have a great and wonderful day!

Lectures for Writer's Workshops: The Power of Myth- Hero's Journey

Spring Dreams Lecture Series I
This seasons lectures are based on learning the foundation of literary works through myth-ology, the hero journey, and how ancient civil-izations used the art of storytelling.

*****

Where do our myths and legends come from?

"Well, there are two types of deed. One is the physical deed; the hero who has performed a war act or a physical act of heroism ñ saving a life, that’s a hero act. Giving himself, sacrificing himself to another. And the other kind is the spiritual hero, who has learned or found a mode of experiencing the supernormal range of human spiritual life, and then come back and communicated it. It’s a cycle, it’s a going and a return, that the hero cycle represents.

But then this can be seen also in the simple initiation ritual, where a child has to give up his childhood and become an adult, has to die, you might say, to his infantile personality and psyche and come back as a self-responsible adult. It’s a fundamental experience that everyone has to undergo, where in our childhood for at least 14 years, and then to get out of that posture of dependency, psychological dependency, into one of psychological self-responsibility, requires a death and resurrection, and that is the basic motif of the hero journey, Leaving one condition, finding the source of life to bring you forth in a richer or more mature or other condition."

~Joseph Campbell, author of the Power of Myth

Myths and Legends Workshop: Lecture Series, The Epic of Gilgamesh

Where do our myths and legends come from? The myth of Gilgamesh comes to us via a poem from 4,000 years ago.

Read the Epic of Gilgamesh via this PDF.

The Epic of Gilgamesh is a 4,000-year-old Mesopotamian poem about a hero who embarks on an arduous quest to find the secret of immortality. Preserved on clay tablets in cuneiform script, it is generally considered to be the earliest great work of literature to survive from the ancient world. In this illustrated lecture, Andrew George, author of a prize-winning translation of the Epic of Gilgamesh, explores four themes related to this Babylonian masterpiece: the archaeology of the poem’s recovery, the reconstruction of its text, the story it tells, and its messages about life and death.

This series has been added to the Spring Dreams Seasonal Reads Program.

More lectures will be added throughout this season.

Have a great and wonderful day.

Ekphrasis as a New Source of Inspiration

Poetry has a new section: Ekpharsis. The term means: "a literary description of or commentary on a visual work of art," but Undawnted has taken the creativity one step further.

I have included chapbooks for original poetry inspired by not only masterpieces from artists like van Gogh, Renoir, Manet, and Monet, but also masters in poetry like Poe and Dickinson. Space photography has been included in this series as well.

As I write, I will list the contents of the poetry books on the selected pages. Once I have enough to warrant publication, I will let you know.

I hope you enjoy this creativity as well as let it inspire your own creations.

Have a great and wonderful day.

Beware the Ides of March

Caesar:
Who is it in the press that calls on me? I hear a tongue shriller than all the music
Cry "Caesar!" Speak, Caesar is turn'd to hear.
