Thank you to Joseph Carrabis and RoundTable 360°

March 28th, I was invited to participate in a Roundtable 360° discussion about creativity and the imagination. Joseph Carrabis and other creative personalities from music, art, theater, and writing wanted to answer the question have you ever wondered what makes creative people creative?

Each participant in the round had their own perspective about what makes creative people creative.

Summary

Being with a group of talented people - regardless of their chosen media - and listening to them discuss their work, how their work choice has shaped their lives, their goals for their work, et cetera, has been a dream of mine since my college years.

Now that dream has a name and place - RoundTable 360°. We get together the last Thursday of each month, share how our disciplines have shaped and changed us, and explore how one discipline can inform another. For example: What can authors learn about setting scenes from photographers? What can dancers learn from painters about expression?

What do you think? Is everyone creative in their own special way? Left brain or right brain, it doesn't really make a difference? Architects are creative with specs and drawings of a building. Biologists are creative in developing new methods to research cells and diseases. Artists are creative in how they use color and geometry to create paintings.

Humanity sets itself apart from the animal kingdom by being creative for entertainment and developing a culture.

Creative people have to learn to shut off the outside world and cultivate their inner stirrings. The present moment is the time that supports the creative function.

It was a nice talk. I enjoyed the informal debate and dialogue between the Roundtable members. I even got to throw in my two cents worth.

If you would like to be a participant, then please contact Joseph Carrabis

Thank you for inviting me!

Have a great and creative day.

Undawnted Expands into Poetry, Prose, and Promo Shorts

Promo Short
Undawnted is still in our Summer Time seasonal reads program (Promo Short), but the month is counting down to September and the beginning of Autumn Cider.

The third and final installment of the Saint series will be published and will have a wide release party later this month. We will continue to provide our creative writing program and projects via A Novelist Idea until the end of the year.

Behind the scenes, Team Undawnted is hard at work creating and uploading poetry and prose shorts to our YouTube Channel. We have added the section: Poetry Slam (Playlist), which will house our poetry videos, including our feature films.

The short videos will also give our readers samples of DL Mullan's prose content. Hear a snippet before you read it! These prose selections will be placed in their appropriate playlists.

As always, the book covers, art, and writings on Undawnted are human derived from the creative imagination, but our shorts and other video compilations are using AI (artificial intelligence)/CGI components to them. These tools allow us to create more variety and expand our entertainment offerings.

We hope you continue to share in our journey.

Have a great and wonderful day.

A Novelist Idea: Fueling the Imagination is about the Center, Anchor, and Authentic Self

As a writer, I don't subscribe to the notion that I must write every day, let alone write X amount of words on a daily basis.  I do as I please.

Because it is not the word count that counts; it is my imagination. If I cannot see, hear, and feel my characters and the story in my imagination, well, neither will my readers. So how is pushing writing as a daily activity going to fuel the very mechanism that is my creativity?

It does not.

Writing for the sake of writing is just writing...

Undawnted is where the imagination is unpredictable, insatiable, and undeniably... unleashed. This statement is how I live my craft. Everyone should have a guiding principle, or vision, for their writing career.

What is yours?

Ask yourself:

  • What do you see in your writing that you would like others to enjoy?
  • What do you want to convey that is unique to you?
  • How do you want your reader to feel when they are done reading what you have written?
  • What is it that you want out of writing that would satisfy your audience and your compulsion to write?

Another question to ask yourself is why do you write? I make this inquiry because I see many writers who have one-sided political views that they use to social engineer their audience. The psychological manipulation of your audience or writing for a small segment of the population will eventually sour people to your writing.

But... I want to be "inclusive!" Watch out for buzzwords. Those types of words usually resonate with fads and failures. I want to represent the underrepresented! If that segment of society is at 5%, then that is pretty much a forgone conclusion. A writer in this category is not interested in being inclusive but rather to the exclusion of 95% of the population, and thus creating a sect, or club. Maybe even a cult mindset in their writing.

Writers need to be wary of such extreme behavior.

If a writer writes exclusively for 15 million people who label themselves "Numerics", then that is all the readership you will hope to cultivate. And, writers must be aware of how their writing is accepted or rejected by this section of society. If you are seen as pandering, then you have pretty much excluded them too.

So what does a writer do? No one wants to be seen as "Numer-phobic," but pandering, and social engineering are just as terrible behaviors to pursue as the former.

How do writers become authentic?

That center for which writers get their creative drive is individual to every writer. If you don't know or feel your writing center, there are a few exercises you can do to center yourself. A writer could go somewhere quiet. Sit under a tree, in a library, or in a bookstore. Watch people interact from all walks of life. Do you feel their energy? Do you feel the trees? books? people? buildings?

With meditation or a creative exercise, find that feeling within yourself. What does that feel like? Can you delve deeper until all there is in the feeling is you? The original emotion that anchors you to a silent reverie of creativity and energy, do you feel that?

Does that center from your spiritual anchor spell out a one-side political or social agenda? Or, is being an authentic person more about all things under the sun, moon, and stars in the sky? Is being your authentic self about personal goals, integrity, and fulfillment?

Then why do you believe that being exclusive and manipulative has anything to do with being a creative architect in the craft of writing? art? media? science? math? instruction? medicine?

If you are an authentic person, then there is no need to belittle your audience with ridiculous or even immature behavior. A creative person, or anyone, who is centered needs only to live their vision statement as a role model. Behavior that manipulates or panders is against that which centers our spirits and anchors our souls.

I take on the challenge of writing from this universal consciousness. There are no inclusive or exclusive energies. I am not beholden to any belief or feel that I must target society as a change agent. The natural course of change is slow over centuries, not quick in the span of two decades (as we have seen in several artificial mass hysteria events since Y2K).

If you know who you are and what you are about, then the psychology and sociology of group dynamics does not affect you. Rather, you are driven by what is authentic, real, and tangible. An authentic person wants a centered sense to their world.

When you place yourself into your writing with the energy of authenticity, then your readers will respond in kind. In that center, you cannot look to others for guidance. That place is where you stand alone. It is you: raw, unfiltered, and unencumbered by outside forces. Since every person has this energy center, no matter their age, race, religion, politics, or orientation, your reader will have a deep connection with your writing, and your imagination.

Who do you want to be? Do you want to be your authentic self? Or, are you content with being a marionette in someone else's vision of you?

I choose to be authentic.

Have a great and wonderful day.

December 26-31, 2021, The Week of Neverending Never Ending

Wow! It is only Wednesday.

When will 2021 end? Not that I am all too enthused about 2022, but this lull between holidays and years has gotten stale. Two more full days until the inevitable: a new year.

I feel my creativity has been zapped right out of me. Is there hope? I hope so, but for now, I am just floating on the sands of time awaiting the next cycle to begin. Nothing says boredom, silence, and silliness like Waiting for Godot. Good dough?

Hello.

Is anyone out there?

Maybe I am waiting on the wrong thing. Am I really waiting on myself? We will wait and see!

Are you having fun yet?

Perhaps, the lull is to recharge my inner batteries. With the stress of nothingness, I am depleted. My spirit is in receivership. The invoice is due, and I have no energy to pay the bill with. Should I barter? Or, is it a non-starter?

A robber!

Who steals my creativity?

I will keep waiting here. I stand between phases of time and space, with the electromagnetic pull of gravity in its wake.

I travel this continuum while I never move. The ending is never far, but never near. The neverending never ending is about to appear.

Are you ready?

Have a great and wonderful time.

The Price of Your Inclusivity May Be Your Creativity

In a mad dash to be as woke as possible, the film industry is changing its rules for inclusion into the awards season by destroying the creative process.

Did you check off all the boxes? Did you include everyone except the people you do not agree with? About time Hollywood ditches 82.5% of America and concentrates only on the most important 4.5% LGBTQ and the 13% African American population. That is, if you are into the statistical make up of the United States.

When organizations design hurdles to control the narrative, then what is the point in participating? It looks like micromanaging at best and social engineering at worst.

People become engaged in authentic stories that have the look and feel of real people. That movie could be science fiction or Shakespearean, but when artificial external influences change the feel of the characters, that is when the public checks out. Woke doctrine has destroyed American cultural institutions like education, sports, and entertainment. There is a reason why woke makes corporations go broke.

Maybe that is the joke?

The vast majority of Americans are not buying into the woke revolution. So the joke is lost on them, completely. Yet, sports teams and the film industry keep pushing the envelope on a product a large swath of people have no interest in consuming.

Are wealthy entertainers just tone deaf?
According to Deadline Hollywood, “…the Kansas City Chiefs pummeled the Houston Texans 34-20, and the ratings were down — a lot. In early numbers, the primetime NBC game scored a 5.2 among adults 18-49 and 16.4 million viewers between 8-11 p.m. ET.

“Now, those numbers for the 8:25-11:30 p.m. ET game will certainly be adjusted upward later, but right now they mark a 16.1% drop over the spectacle of the September 5, 2019 season opener in the advertiser-rich demographic. In an America and a NFL still adjusting to the new normal of live sports in the era of COVID-19, last night’s game also fell 16.1% in total sets of eyeballs from last year’s fast affiliate results.”
then there is:
The site reported that the “Braves-Phillies earned a 0.8 and 1.20 million on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball (including ESPN2 Statcast coverage) — down 30% in ratings and 33% in viewership from week five of last season (5/5/19: Cardinals-Cubs: 1.1, 1.81M), but up a tick and 2% respectively from last year’s comparable date (9/1/19 Mets-Phillies: 0.7, 1.19M).

“Earlier Sunday,” SMW added, “a Yankees-Mets doubleheader had a 0.25 and 381,000 on TBS and a 0.18 and 303,000 on ESPN2. Cardinals-Reds had 340,000 and Padres-Rockies 231,000 on ESPN Monday.”
When there is no audience to play to, there is no revenue. No one will by dvds, jerseys, or tickets. Slowly but surely these industries will die a horrible death only to be buried as paupers.

What is the point of this exercise? Humans are attracted to stories they can relate to and feel are organic, authentic products. Like begets like, that is your audience.

All the woke writers are following a fad that will soon fade out. Do you really want to be known for that book you wrote way back when it was cool to be exclusionary person?

Undawnted follows mythology, literature, and original creativity initiatives. No fluff here. No fads. No woke. Just real characters that look and feel authentic.

That is how writers should write: from their internal processes. Soon woke culture will bankrupt entertainment because the fashion of exclusion of more than 80% of Americans will soon go out of style.

You can include anyone you want in your creativity, but once you start down the road of selective editing to satisfy an imaginary checklist: that is when your readership checks out.

The sports ratings in particular support this thesis statement.

Stop the joke now: exclusivity is not that funny.

Microfiction: Reality to Creative Inspiration

Ever have a situation that comes up and you would believe it would make a good story? Last night, that very situation happened to me. I took the incident and turned it into a piece of microfiction, Midnight Run:
pop, pop, pop... goes the 45 caliber gun fired into the dead of the night. 1248am and silence becomes a ruckus of sound as a police helicopter zooms over my house like a dragon. each breath of the mammoth machine vibrates my house and sucks in my roof shingles. until the beast passes into the west and my house folds in on itself again. then silence emerges from the chaos. no more pursuit as the criminals are subdued by the dragon's keepers in flack jackets.
Everyday writers can use common place events to explore the world of writing.

This incident gave me the opportunity to do a small writing exercise.

What happens in your life that could become a creative outlet for you?

2019, Let the Creative Energy Flow

How do you feel today?

It is 2019. The energy has changed and formed a new year. Creativity. Sociability. Boldness. Everything you have come to expect from Undawnted.

While the weather has gotten cold, snow and sleet in the Sonoran Desert this past New Year's Eve, I have been reorganizing and redesigning some of the elements here on the site. Little did I know, the energies of the new year were already helping my creative spirit.

2018 was tough on me. I feel like I did not grow enough as a creator as I would have liked. I did some extraordinary feats, that you would not believe me if I told you anyway, but you might read about when I write my Superfiction novels. Really fantastic adventures for a bed bound cripple.

There was love and betrayal as well as out of this universe friendships. The ups and downs have left me a bit sea sick. Roller coaster rides were never for me. This set of 365, serenity and depth are the key players. I want a positive impact with positive outcomes.

Therefore I have reduced some sections so that I can concentrate on what I can do rather than the hopes and dreams of what I wish to do. When I get more accomplished, then I can start adding back my other projects. Still there is a lot on my plate, creatively speaking of course.

Is there something you would like to see Undawnted do in 2019? A novel? A sequel? Or, maybe it is poetry for you?

Let me know on my social media accounts:
From me to you, Happy New Year! Let 2019 be the year to celebrate creativity!

Summer, Interrupted

This summer appears to be the nonstop roller coaster ride type.

All I want to do is get in some writing time! It appears that my focus is on too many pans in the fire. Ugh! The sad thing is: those aren't my pans.

Yet here I am cooking meals I have no idea what I am doing for each one. So I stopped myself and figured out a game plan. I will fry up that order at this time. The next order will come after, and so on. Then I can free up my evenings to do some writing.

Much better.

I have a few projects I would like to get off the ground this autumn. So it's back to the keyboard for me!

How has your summer been?

Have a great and wonderful day.

Short Stories Section Update: Season Side Up! Series

I had this idea pop into my head. A brilliant idea, I may add. This idea was to fashion a series of books about the seasons.

Now that concept is nothing new, so I have to put a twist on the idea to make it mine. I will combine poetry, maybe some original digital art, and of course package the books up for entertainment.

Kind of like a diary but without the teenage angst!

When I get more into writing these little gems, I will let you know what direction I am heading in for sure.

Right now, I am just so excited about these books, especially the book cover art. Isn't this one fabulous? You can view the rest of the book series on the Short Stories section.

Divine inspiration. The muse descended and she brought chocolate! Good, Muse. Keep the creativity flowing!

Have a great and wonderful day!

Ekphrasis as a New Source of Inspiration

Poetry has a new section: Ekpharsis. The term means: "a literary description of or commentary on a visual work of art," but Undawnted has taken the creativity one step further.

I have included chapbooks for original poetry inspired by not only masterpieces from artists like van Gogh, Renoir, Manet, and Monet, but also masters in poetry like Poe and Dickinson. Space photography has been included in this series as well.

As I write, I will list the contents of the poetry books on the selected pages. Once I have enough to warrant publication, I will let you know.

I hope you enjoy this creativity as well as let it inspire your own creations.

Have a great and wonderful day.

Poetry Book Debut in September

The Descent will be released by Sonoran Dawn Studios on September 16th.

I am really excited about publishing my poetry. I hope you enjoy my creativity as much as I enjoyed created the book and its contents.

Some acclaim from readers of my poetry:
"Not usually a poetry fan but someone here recommended I check this book out and I am so glad I did! Wow you are very good - the poems are intelligent, understandable and yet fanatstic! Truly - you are gifted in this arena! My favorites so far... "Upon Reading Edgar Allen Poe and Revenge."
Both the mentioned poems are in this collection.

Have a great and wonderful day!

Memory Lane

I have been updating my credentials on Sonoran Dawn Studios.

The books, courses, lectures, and other learning mechanisms I employed over the years were a lot lengthier than I had given myself credit for.

In a word: wow!

I am glad I availed myself to not only study but to travel. I have been to numerous historical locations, locations in general, as well as touched history.

Different points of view is an important skill to have as a creator. I wish I could have done more before I became disabled but while I was healthy, at least I did not hide in my house. I lived. Moments of time, I experienced eras and cultures. I felt time.

So memory lane has really bolstered my passion for knowledge and experience. I hope that one day I can return to what I enjoyed: living out loud.

For now, I will live to express.

What have you done today to break out of your comfort zone?

Have a great and wonderful day!

Histoires ou Contes du Temps Passé

Today marks a significant anniversary for fairy tales:
— perhaps better known as “Les Contes de ma Mère l’Oye,” or “Mother Goose’s Tales,” from the rough print which was inserted as a frontispiece to the first collected edition in 1697. He would not even publish them in his own name. They were declared to be by P. Darmancour, Perrault’s young son. In order that the secret might be well kept, Perrault abandoned his usual publisher, Coignard, and went to Barbin. The stories had previously appeared from time to time, anonymously, in Moetjens’ little magazine the “Recueil,” which was published from The Hague. “La Belle au Bois Dormant” (“Sleeping Beauty”) was the first: and in rapid succession followed “Le Petit Chaperon Rouge” (“Red Riding-Hood”), “Le Maistre Chat, ou le Chat Botté” (“Puss in Boots”), “Les Fées” (“The Fairy”), “Cendrillon, ou la Petite Pantoufle de Verre” (“Cinderella”), “Riquet à la Houppe” (“Riquet of the Tuft”), and “Le Petit Poucet” (“Tom Thumb”).
Thank you, Charles Perrault, for giving the world stories that invoke childhood imagination and creativity.

In some way, our current storytelling ventures build on his works.
