No Artificial Intelligence Used in the Creation of Art or Books by DL Mullan

It is a sad day when technology becomes such a crutch that a writer has to draw a line in the sand.

Readers as well as other writers are questioning the usage of applications and programs that take control away from human integrity.

For those readers in our audience who are interested in this topic, Undawnted does not utilize artificial intelligence, or A.I. in the creation of the art, poetry, or prose. If other writers wish to use this technology, that is for them to decide and let the readers know. As for the artist, author, and audio/visual creator, DL Mullan, she does not use products besides grammar and spell check applications.

Rest assured that when you purchase a chapbook, book, art item, you are buying a human created product from history, mythology, human imagination/ingenuity, and the craft of storytelling.

Thank you for your continued support,

Book Cover Design: The Expectations of Readers and How You Are Perceived

We have all heard the idiom: don't judge a book by its cover.

Well, most of us have. Some authors and editors take this idiom to mean that their poor cover design won't be held against them by readers.

WRONG.

I could use other people's design mistakes to make my point, but that would be unfair. Instead, I will give a lesson with only my own designs as examples.

So independent authors, here is your design workshop.

If you have refrained from becoming astute in the ways of publication design and insist on creating your own book covers, yeah, I can spot them. Actually, readers in general can spot bad designs. When that happens, your book undersells, if the publication sells at all.

Readers will not purchase covers that look and feel unprofessional. So, as the idiom goes: it does not apply to you. People do judge books by their covers.

Independent authors often use or pay for what someone else has created, as long as the background illustration is free or cheap. Some even try to create their own designs, but end up with a less than stellar dismount. What does a poor indie do?

If you are going the route of doing your own book cover designs, then avail yourself to a course in design theory. I had the opportunity to take courses and other avenues of study from creative industry experts when I went to community college. I was lucky. I learned from the best.

When I first began doing my own designs, I remember how awful they were. My brain does not function well under constant inflammation, and I have to compensate for that ongoing disability. With time, however, I was able to recover my knowledge of publication design. If you have noticed, my book covers and website images look more professional by the year.

I also have the advantage of being an award-winning digital artist. I understand composition, color, and creativity. Most people are not like me, some of them need a little help. I have offered to assist. Sometimes it works out great, and sometimes it is a disaster.

I have placed an example of poor cover design above in Flying High. What draws you to the cover? What repels you? Would you read this book?

This illustration of poor design fundamentals is why most independent or self-published authors under perform in their market. A bad cover means you are handing over your book sales to someone else. Your competition either has a publishing house creating their designs, or the authors have spent $250+ per cover.

What is the solution? Spend money you don't have? Or, learn good cover design?

First, compare and contrast. Go online to any retailer who sells books and look at professional book covers. What do you see that is on all of those covers? How would you modify those designs to make your own style but still be attractive to readers?

I find that many independent authors just slap a design together without putting much thought in using their covers as a net positive marketing tool. Covers take time. The right design takes time.

Here are a few cover designs I created:

Now take notes on what you like and dislike about these designs. What attracts you? What repels you? In comparison with bad design elements in the Flying High example, what are good design elements that you can pick out from these three covers?

This article is your first step in creating a good book cover.

Use it wisely.

Have a great and wonderful day.

Seasonal Outlook for New Opportunities

I wanted something more for Undawnted as to the change of seasons.

Therefore, I created four different book covers: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. I wanted to jot down how the seasons reflected my inner dialogue. These books will be an amalgamation of art, prose, and poetry.

If others would like to join this e-book, then I can make an anthology series. I would publish the books under the Sonoran Dawn Studios (my publishing house) banner. If no one joins this unique series, then I will write it off as C'est la vie, such as life.

Here are the book covers so far.

If you would like to participate, please drop me a line using the Contact Form.

Have a great and seasonal day!

Stayin' Alive, All By Myself... I am on a Roll to Better Outcomes

I know. I have been gone awhile, but I have been doing what I needed to do.

After four years of being told that I could not get a refinance loan or any type of loan, not because of bad credit, but because I had already financed my property at the lowest available rate. The banks would not refinance if I could not get a lower rate by at least one percentage point.

I was stuck. I had already received air conditioning finance estimates starting at $150 a month for four years. On a fixed income, that was not doable.

So I had tried three or four times over the duration, but not through covid, to raise the $7500 that I had been quoted for a new system. I live in Arizona. Central air is about survival, not luxury. A handful of friends flocked to my banner, but the amount raised ($350ish) was nowhere near enough to purchase a unit.

The art and writing communities at large never bothered once. That was disheartening from my point of view. For communities that push love, light, and inclusion for everyone... I was very much excluded. Sounds like that ideology is just an excuse to be prejudiced against people they do not agree with.

I disagree with many people, but have never left someone to die. I help where I can and I have helped a lot. Far more than many people who claim to be inclusive.

Even though certain communities have disappointed me, at least I know I still have friends and a shit load of good luck... see, when you are a good person, you get that type of help from the universe.

Annual percentage rates lowered and my excellent credit afforded me a great refinance package, which led to a new and top of the line air conditioner for an excellent price. After nearly five years of constant worry, I am safe and cool. I will finally have a heater in the winter time too. That means I will be able to write my novels again.

I am so happy.

The universe rewards good deeds and people. While most of you were stuck in your homes during covid... now you know how I live and feel being this sick... I was protecting all of you from hunger and homelessness.

So don't let newly elected politicians tell you that the $1400 was because of them; it was because of me. Just so you know. People take credit for my deeds when they had nothing to do with my work.

I have a few items to do yet, but I will be actively writing poetry and novels this summer. I will be posting more writing exercises too. Although, I will not be updating my Facebook accounts because that social media conglomerate does not believe in factual information that I have provided to my friend's list for over ten years. I am now locked out of my personal and professional accounts, but don't you worry, I always land on my feet.

Life is good now.

I am still going to tell the truth and change the world for the better. That is coming. The wheels are already in motion by good people all over the world. Some people will not accept or like the change, but that is not my problem. I only solve them.

Speaking of solutions: nothing can stop what is coming.

I made a plan and I am sticking to it. You may just like what I am about to do. Who knows, you may just want to get in on the action yourself.

More information in the coming weeks. Watch for news coming out of Sonoran Dawn Studios

Watch for my new books and cover designs.

I am Stayin' Alive, All By Myself as the songs go: I am on a roll.

Have a great and wonderful day.

Never Take the Advice of a Person with an American Flag as Their Profile Pic

That response was literally written under a reply I gave in a writer's group.

A writer wanted to change all her characters from one racial profile to a diverse group of characters. That sentiment is all well and good, but what do you know about other ethnicities?

Have you researched, interviewed, and experienced that culture?

Since you haven't taken the time to find out that my profile picture is from my genealogical blog: Our Rugged Individualism, where I have denoted family members who have been in the service of the United States in one capacity or another, I seriously doubt you would take the time to do so with someone else.

For the sake of history, I have an ancestor who came over on the Anne in 1623. Over 397 years has my family been in North America. I have listed him and others in my 1776 Patriot Project after I discovered direct relations to the American Revolutionary War.

But I guess doing genealogical work makes me ineligible to speak about any topic under the sun, not to mention having my family members born under the red, white, and blue since the inception and dedication of our nation.

That must be enough evidence of my supposed guilt (of what?) to convict me of utter mental incapacity.

If you feel that people who are patriotic in any way to the United States of America are absurd, then why are you living in the United States of America?

Asking for a friend.

To me if you do not like your country and fellow citizens of that country, the question would be: why are you here? and  moreover: why haven't you left?

There are many nations on this Earth that hate their citizens so much that they put them to work in the fields (Venezuela), kill them for their skin color (South Africa), and place them in death camps for their religious beliefs (China).

Why not join one of those fun places? Since you are so enthused that you have picked up where Hitler left off... The United States helped defeat the Nazi regime. People forget.

So if you make fun of people who are Americans, disabled, female, and from survivors of the Bolshevik Revolution (wow! triple minority status), doesn't that make you the bad guy? The intolerant? The bigot?

Writers cannot have those immature hangups. Writers have to be authentic persons independent of the mindless fads and fixtures that derail our culture from the endless track of possibilities.

If you do not know a race or its culture, then why are you writing about them? Writers write from what they know. Those are the rules. So if you don't know, you go out and gain experience. In writing, knowledge matters.

Today's writers ignore simple guidelines. That separates the good, seasoned writers from the unprofessional, immature writers who give other writers a bad name in independent publishing.

And, the attitude of discrimination means you don't have the aptitude or temperament to be a writer. You're too caught up in what's in to realize that it is already out.

Real writers and published authors cannot afford to be ignorant, biased totalitarians. That type of behavior is counter to the creative mind. Yet social justice has produced a whole generation of writers who are so intolerant of others in the name of tolerance (ironic) that someone with knowledge and experience is treated as a leper.

Is that my finger?

Anyway, I wish people would understand how foolish they look when they pull this crap on experienced professionals. Ignorance is a choice. I choose to counter cultural ineptitude by calling it out.

Get out of your safe space and learn about other people.

Have a great and wonderful day.

The Art of Chapbook Publication

I am asked often how to make a chapbook.

Here are some simple steps to make a product with a good production value:
  • Use a word processing software program that is compatible with the creation of pdf's.
  • Structure your chapbook with front matter, content, and back matter.
    • Front Matter should have informative elements for your reader like:
      • Title page
      • Copyright/Publishing page
      • Table of Contents
    • Contents should be in logical/chronological order with numbering
    • Back Matter should have extras for your reader like:
      • Author biography
      • Thank you
      • Dedication (maybe Front Matter for Print books)
      • Publisher's mark
  • Book design cover art to visually explain your poetry with images instead of words with:
    • Title
    • Tag line, if applicable
    • Author's (pen) name
The time and dedication to put all these elements together is necessary to give your audience a complete sense of what message, feeling, or thought you wanted to convey to them.

Many publishers will charge around $1,000 for their time, original art work, and editing services.

So if you would like me to do a chapbook for you in pdf format with my original design cover art, editing, layout, and internal design services, please note that I charge a fee.

Anthologies I usually do for free or a reading fee of $1 per poem/microfiction prose piece. Then I will give the anthology out for free for one day and then begin to charge for my time per chapbook sold.

Considering many people do not buy anthologies, I am usually out my time.

Thems the breaks.

So if you would like to hire me to do your chapbook under 50 pages including original artwork, front/back matter and contents. Then set a goal of a $250 to $300 budget. That is with the originator handing in a typo free document.

Since my original cover art starts out at the $200 price point, poets and writer's are really getting a great deal. If you would like to hire me to accomplish a New Year's goal of a publication credit for 2020, then please go over to my Sonoran Dawn Studios social media page and write me a private message

I take Paypal.

Thank you!

*****
Please be advised that there is a $50 nonrefundable payment due before any work can begin as to safeguard my time creating a cover design mock up for you. Then you can decide after the mock up if you would like to continue, if you do, then $200 of the overall completed chapbook fee will also be nonrefundable.

It is unfortunate but I have ran into people who want to see the product before payment only to take the work for themselves and leave me without compensation. It does not happen often but now I put in barriers to those individuals who have dishonorable intentions.

Thank you for your understanding.

The Politics of the Creative Mind: Is Conformity Worth the Price of Admission?

In the United States of America, we have freedom of expression and speech.

Well, we did until the political and social agendas changed toward censorship. Now someone can be censored off tech platforms, blocked by others on social media and even have their comments deleted from a forum because their speech was "rude" or uncomplimentary. None has disconcerted me more than in the creative art, craft, and writing fields.

The tolerance level of social justice has become the intolerance that comes with a political movement called: censorship. You cannot hold this opinion because it doesn't validate someone's way of life, personal decisions, or just a fleeting emotion so you are not allowed your freedom of expression or speech. It might offend someone.

That is a corrupt system. A system that supports censorship does not tolerate anything or anyone outside a limited and cloistered psychological schema. First, you cannot say this word. Then you cannot express an idea. In the slow detachment of logic from the social constructions of dystopian control mechanisms, people learn to censor their own ideas and by default begin to control other people's behavior through peer pressure, bullying of the pecking order until the masses are so contorted that reality has bent into illusion.

Those creative forces who are not under the mass socio-hypnosis are now the dissenting voices in a world gone mad. If you do not jump to key words and phrases of neurolinguistic programming, then you are seen as a threat. How dare people question the official story, someone's feelings, or another person's decisions even if those beliefs do not match up to reality, their feelings are detrimental and cause violent actions, or those decisions lead to permanent disability, scarring, or irreversible physical damage.

If you see through the delusions of others and speak out, then you have no friends, no coworkers, no associations, and no way to defend yourself. The world implodes onto itself. The social credit score is thus born.

You are now tied to other people's opinions about, of, and around you. She walked down that street in a miniskirt and got raped... she caused her own rape! That is the world we have come to in this reality side show: the conspiracy of dunces.

In this world, the outlandish becomes the norm. You are six degrees from Kevin Bacon. So everything he does reflects on you! If he drinks organic, free trade coffee, then you are safe. If he believes a woman without evidence, then you are safe. If he supports mutilating children for transgenderism, then you are an acceptable person. Hell we have twelve years to turn around Climate Change, so you better give up your electricity or the Earth will melt! Once you do, you will be revered as a god/goddess of green environmentalism.

I just described bat shit crazy.

I am six degrees away from Kevin Bacon. Actually, I have been less than six degrees from many in Hollywood. I can honestly tell you that their decisions in life do nothing for me. They live a separate life than me. That is the way it should be. We should live our own independent lives free from a social credit score.

Free from censorship, but we have a group of Americans who have sold out to the ideas of social justice, which requires no evidence, no logic, and hypocritically, no justice at all. Americans do not get their day in court. People are smeared online, in the media, and in social circles when someone does not conform to the hive mind of social control.

If you hunger for acceptance, want to conform, and need to control what others do and say, then you are not a creative person. You are a sellout. You sold your energy to become a mind slave to a dystopian future not even Orwell could devise.

I know I am going to lose more "friends" over this essay because I am the dissenter. I am the logic. I am the person who researches what an idea is and follows that construct to its original source. I am often ridiculed, disrespected, attacked and threatened for voicing my informed, researched, and educated opinion.

I am no degrees away from understanding the world around me.

And, that is a thought crime.

If anything that has been said here today has offended you, then you have a belief system. Beliefs can be molded and changed over time. Cold hard facts cannot be changed, manipulated like in the case of statistics, but when you get right down to it: facts are facts.

Facts are researchable. That leads to knowledge. Knowledge creates experience. And, experience becomes wisdom.

Beliefs are driven by emotions. Emotions are malleable. Emotions are our own egos trying to defend the abstract, the unknowable, and the personal. Beliefs should never be substituted for facts, knowledge, experience, and of course, any form of wisdom.

So who are you? What do you want?

Do you want to live in a free society? A Constitutional Republic that protects freedoms, rights of the individual?

Or, do you want to live in a concentration camp of your mind, plagued by beliefs and emotions changed by the dictator of the day? Because that is what mob rule, democracy is. What socialism and by extension Communism are.

Without freedom of speech and expression, there is no creative spirit. There are no masterpieces. There is no inspiration.

So do you want to believe? Or, do you want to be free?

Until your next dose of reality: have a great and wonderful day.

Cover Art Design

Updated Logo for Future Publication Projects

I was creating new images for use with articles and essays here on Undawnted. I noticed that images are used on Pinterest for readers to save their favorite things: art, poetry, and writing. I decided to oblige with some updated art.

Then I began playing with the Undawnted logo. I wanted a nice marketing tool to use with any publications that will be published from here like Family Genealogy, whereas novels and chapbooks are published through Sonoran Dawn Studios

So you will probably see this logo on this site and in use for other projects:

New Marketing Logo

Yeah, I know. It looks very Eye of Horus. Sorry, no secret society membership here.

Addendum... I am a student of Joseph Campbell. Mythology is one of my favorite subjects. This logo fulfills that mythical scratch!

Plotting My Stargate

Every time I sit down to write, another project pops out of the woodwork.

I am busy with an external source's clothing line, book cover art events, as well as my own creative ideas.

I didn't know summers could be this eventful!

Since I am disabled by illness, my time to be creative everyday is limited. So once I run out of juice, I am done until I can recharge my batteries again. I wish I had solar energy!

Even with the handful of projects swirling around me, I am still outlining and mapping out a future for myself. You cannot move forward in a vacuum, even thought I try. The universe constantly reminds me that plot points have to be set into motion even in our own lives. The stargate of creativity works when you have all the coordinates.

I know my timeline has changed several times especially now that I am permanently disabled. I have to go with the flow. I am in uncharted territory and my stargate malfunctions all the time.

So am I accustomed to having a map that goes in several directions at once. "Scotty, beam me up!" Does that work? Can I change scifi series in the middle of an essay?

No matter your stargate, life does not have to be an endless series of stops and goes. You can decide for yourself where you will want to end up. Follow your stars to change your stars.

You may feel worn or cursed, but I assure you there is light at the end of the tunnel. You just have to know how to program your stargate. Brainstorming, goal setting, and some patience goes a long way.

I have always wanted to be a writer and artist. Disability now gives me that focus. I just wish had a lot more time to be creative.

Life is a set of coordinators. If you are headed in the wrong direction, well, then set a new course.
I'll be waiting in the CafĂ© at the End of the Universe.

Oh, I did it again!

Have a great and wonderful day.

Works in Progress

So many projects... so little time!

Ever feel that way?  The summer seems to be the worst to pile on commitments but I rather be doing something else. School kids refer to such angst as: Spring Fever. Well, I guess I have Summer Fever. I just have caught the bug last season and now the disease has taken hold of me!

My works in progress are numerous. Mostly, my work has to do with getting promotional materials ready for each season and my websites. When my mind is focused, I like to work on what feels the best: art, poetry, or writing.

Art has won out these many weeks. I am making sure what I have written has a nice, professional package to go with it. All writers should take a few courses on how to create a professional image. It is vital to our field.

I hope soon I will get back into writing. I want to have some more fiction and poetry publications done. I am way behind my intended goals.

That is okay. Sometimes we need a break from the chores of life to see what truly matters to us. So go ahead and take your shoes off. As long as you know the to-do list still waiting for you at the end.

It's summer for goodness sakes!

Why not enjoy a little time in the sun?

Have a great and wonderful day.

Delilah is a Winner!

The book cover art I did for the novel. Delilah by Kaye Lynne Booth did not make it into the Final Round of the Summer Loving Book Cover Event, however...

...that does not mean, the book cover art I created was a bust. Delilah still walked away with the most votes in the Western category.

What a feat!

I am very proud of this cover. It's art. It encompasses the theme of the novel. The cover art does not rely on cheap marketing tricks to be a winner.

THANK YOU to the person who nominated my cover for this event, the author Kaye Lynne Booth for the support, and ALL the Voters!

You made the book cover art a success!

If you would like to peruse my other digital creations, please stop by the Art, Cover, & Prints page on Sonoran Dawn Studios for examples.

Thank you! I cannot wait for more opportunities like this one in the future.

Have a great and wonderful summer!
