Undawnted Interviews: Denise Aparo, Mowhawk Monster: The Curse of the Herkimer Diamond, Day 1 of WordCrafter's Curses: Chronicles of Darkness Anthology Blog Tour

About  Curses: Chronicles of Darkness

There are all types of curses.

Cursed places, cursed items, cursed people, cursed families.

Curses that last throughout time. Curses which can't be broken. Curses which are brought upon ourselves. Curses that will kill you and those that will only make you wish you were dead.

Eleven tantalizing tales of curses and the cursed. Includes stories by Kaye Lynne Booth, Molly Ertel, C.R. Johansson, Robert White, Joseph Carrabis, Paul Kane, Danaeka Scrimshaw, Abe Margel, and Denise Aparo.

_____

Interview with Denise Aparo

What is it about a Curse that inspires your imagination?

A curse inspires my imagination because it is something outside the norm. Anything unusual or paranormal gets my attention! The very word, curse, incites connotations of evil, negative, and possible harmful outcomes. These emotions, sensations, and the reactions that result will make for good storytelling!

What type of Curse is your favorite to write about: blaspheme, afflict, imprecate, or torment? Hex or jinx? By spell, object, or charm?

I believe I use “imprecate” the most.

As an author, I like to write about the paranormal, where curses are invoked by a person or being. I have had my characters use charms or incantations to imprecate curses on another person or being.

I definitely use “hexes” more than a “jinx.” However, if I create a character that is either too foolish/playful or not as savvy as most, then I would consider having them use a “jinx.”

I use all three “spell, object, and charm.” My character’s recite incantations to invoke a spell or charm and I definitely use “charmed objects.” In a few of my stories I have a charmed tome and sigil that gives muse inspiration to those who know how to use them or if the tome sees fit to have the person inspired.

Do you use mortal, paranormal, or supernatural means to render a Curse in your creative imagination?

I have stories where humans invoke a curse, but I also have paranormal beings preform a curse on a person, being, or object. I am open to all possibilities and have many stories where supernatural means are used.

Which type of Curse or progenitor of a Curse enticed you to write your story?

I’m mostly drawn to the generational curse. It is one of the oldest curses, which are the line of descent. This is where the curse that is passed through the family line from one generation to the next. However, I don’t believe it must be only family but perhaps those connected to the family or ancestors is fascinating, too.

In my story, “The Mohawk Monster: Curse of the Herkimer Diamond,” the curse is invoked by a Native American Goddess: Komorkis, Goddess of the Moon. She is devastated when the elite warriors of her sacred people are slain by an evil supernatural tribe. She curses the land where they murdered—hence, the diamonds embedded in the earth.

Are Curses forever?

As a writer, I can make a curse forever with only one way to break it and it is probably my most favored way of doing them. But I’m not opposed to setting limits on a curse, like a bomb! I plan to write my next curse story with a curse that is ‘set to go off’ at a certain time, or have it invoked when a certain ‘thing’ happens!

If you ever had the chance to use a Curse in real life, would you?

Definitely not. Curses are nothing to be flippant about. In life, I believe that our words have power. All words. This is why I am so attracted to words and language. This is why I am a writer. I believe that “Like attracts Like.”

In the law of attraction—the oldest law is found in the book of the Holy Bible and other ancient works like in Buddhism, Hinduism, Hermeticism, and Greek Philosophy. One bible states the following: Mark 11:24: "Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

Hinduism believes in Karma and “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.”

Have you ever known anyone or anything (object, town, landmark) who/that was Cursed?

I believe that many people and objects can be “cursed”—on what scale is undetermined. Many call this sort of thing either misfortune, bad luck, fate, karma, or whatever. This can be believed through social conditioning, such as cultural beliefs and superstitions. Many families have at least a few of them, such as “don’t walk under a ladder!” or when a bird comes into a home through an open window it may trigger a negative event. It also depends on the color of the bird, too!

When I was in grammar school, I walked by an old, dilapidated, house each day. I would cross the road when I approached it! The windows were dark and there was always a buzzing sound that resonated from the building. I was terrified I would be cursed if I got too close. I wasn’t old enough to be cynical so I think it was an instinctive response!

Have you ever visited a Cursed place?

I have had negative feelings or vibes from places, in the past. I was in South Carolina several years ago and went on a tour to an old prison. One room gave me chills and it was a hot summer night. I left it immediately! I usually avoid those places if I am able.

Another time, I did a tour of a Nantucket Mansion and I remember that one bedroom gave me bad vibes. I went outside after that.

Do you believe that in order for a Curse to work that the target of that Curse has to believe in it?

That’s a good question. Maybe not, because I believe in the ‘power of attraction,’ so a curse, negative energy, or bad mojo can definitely surround or overwhelm a person and possibly cause a negative reaction. However, again, I believe that we as humans can protect ourselves from negativity by attracting the positive! I suppose this means we are able to counter the curse, block or repel a curse with our positive thoughts…maybe these are our own spells or invocations? Many of the basic and predominant religions use invocations. Prayer or to pray is to make an earnest request to invoke a desire. Many holy people, shamans, ministers and priests use prayer or invocations.

Do you believe that a Curse is inevitable, and works no matter anyone's belief system?

No, I don’t believe they are inevitable. I think that a curse or bad mojo can affect a person, but how they handle the situation or deal with the negativity is up to them. I believe that we can protect ourselves much of the time. If someone is determined to do harm in any manor, then they probably are able to affect another person in some capacity. But again, I believe that we all can counter those negativities with our own will. This is why that when I write a curse story, the person, object, or being, can eventually break the curse.

What swear word is your go-to Curse?

A “curse” word or phrase I always say is, “oh, crap!” I suppose all ‘curses’ are the most negative thing or word a person calls to mind!

Anything else that you would like to add about yourself, your story, or books?

I think that most occurrences, objects, places, or thoughts in the horror genre, need either a curse, hex, jinx, or other adverse paranormal thing to create a good scary, or thought-provoking story.

I hope to publish my first novel, Crossbows, soon. It is a story with many curses, counter-curses, and supernatural gifts.

I think that I will always insert the paranormal in any story I write!

Seasonal Outlook for New Opportunities

I wanted something more for Undawnted as to the change of seasons.

Therefore, I created four different book covers: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. I wanted to jot down how the seasons reflected my inner dialogue. These books will be an amalgamation of art, prose, and poetry.

If others would like to join this e-book, then I can make an anthology series. I would publish the books under the Sonoran Dawn Studios (my publishing house) banner. If no one joins this unique series, then I will write it off as C'est la vie, such as life.

Here are the book covers so far.

If you would like to participate, please drop me a line using the Contact Form.

Have a great and seasonal day!

Short Stories Section Update: Season Side Up! Series

I had this idea pop into my head. A brilliant idea, I may add. This idea was to fashion a series of books about the seasons.

Now that concept is nothing new, so I have to put a twist on the idea to make it mine. I will combine poetry, maybe some original digital art, and of course package the books up for entertainment.

Kind of like a diary but without the teenage angst!

When I get more into writing these little gems, I will let you know what direction I am heading in for sure.

Right now, I am just so excited about these books, especially the book cover art. Isn't this one fabulous? You can view the rest of the book series on the Short Stories section.

Divine inspiration. The muse descended and she brought chocolate! Good, Muse. Keep the creativity flowing!

Have a great and wonderful day!

On Holiday Schedule for the Rest of the Year

It is time to kick back and relax!

Oh, who are we kidding? I am busy editing and writing Nocturnal Redemption for a winter release. As well as I have updated Sonoran Dawn Studios, Poetry, and Publishing sites. My personal site has also seen a good scrub.

With the temperatures decreasing, it is time to bundle up and write! Winter is always a fun time to sit and write. At night, when all the shows are repeats due to the holidays, I have dedicated nights to polish for next year's release.

2017 appears to be going to the fictional side of writing. 2016 was nonfiction essays and recipes for the most part. This new year should see two new chapbooks as well as one novel plus the second book to In the Name of Blood series.

By the end of December, I should have a great list of publications ready for their debut. Then Sonoran Dawn's Schedule page will be updated.

But for now, I will write and create and edit. So I will update the blogs in between this last push of the year. No more releases are expected until 2017.

As you can see my vacation has been all work and lots of play!

Have a great and wonderful day!

Supermoon Fading for Now

The night sky is wonderful this time of the year.

Orion is out in the early morning hours and the moon phases across the star studded darkness. October's Hunter's Moon is waxing. A New Moon is on the way. November and December will also see their own Supermoons this year. Orion and his nebulae star cluster will watch the moon go by from new, crescent, waning, full, waxing into the nights.

I am up to watch it all unfold.

The mornings are cool until noon. That is when I am doing chores and coordinating my activities. Then it's off to sleep in the heat of the day.

It won't last long. Autumn beacons. The man made high pressure systems are about to fall. Mother Nature will get her way because she is about to move in.

I hope she packed some rain.

Have a great and wonderful day!

Trick or Treat Time Again

Okay... not the best picture, but here is my new Halloween plate!

The large plastic round fits nicely in my china cabinet. The skull motif inspired me to decorate my entire cabinet in Halloween fun!

October is my 31 days of Halloween.

Autumn for me begins on September 1st no matter if it is 110 degrees or less. It is meteorological fall and I am sticking to that.

The night is cool, but the house is still warm from the hot, dry days of summer. So the windows are open, the laundry machines are on, and I am dusting away.

The nights are beginning to smell different as the cool arctic air filters into the subtropical mass that used to house monsoon moisture.

Now I wait.

Ghosts and goblins abound. Each makes an appearance at my front door for a one night only engagement. Will I have enough candy?

Trick or Treat!

Have a great and wonderful day!

Sights and Smells of Autumn Writing

Cooler weather has come to the Sonoran Desert! Autumn has arrived.

With the crescent moon in the sky and Mars glowing after sunset, this new season has wowed and wooed the observer. The smell of autumn fills the air with fire pits, mesquite, and marshmallows.

Writers can use their senses to show the reader. In the above paragraph, the reader is taken on a journey through their senses and engage with the season. Autumn is alive on crisp, cool evenings.

Reading and writing should never be a passive event.

Get your autumn into action! Write for the five senses. Engage with the reader.

And, rejoice in the return to pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, and spices!

Have a great and wonderful day!

Autumn Brings a Chill

A cooler night and morning are on their way. Autumn is that time of year when the light equal the darkness, sweaters are needed for that evening walk, and the leaves turn beautiful colors across the higher terrains.

The warm sultriness of the monsoon has faded. Insects have begun their transition into the slumber of hibernation. Winter is on her way, but not until autumn has his way.

Eventually, leaves will crinkle and fall. In the end, so will we all. Evening is upon us.  We will watch as the nights grow longer and the stars glisten evermore above.

Autumn brings a chill so light a lantern to guide us on our way.

What do you love about the change of seasons?

Have a great and wonderful day.

All Beginnings Begin with Another Chapter's End

Autumn is right around the corner but summer still lingers on.

The cooler mornings have arrived. The gentle breezes summon the desert's occupants to awaken from their heat comas and rise to meet the world. The desert is alive once more at the stroke of midnight.

Summer cannot hold out much longer. Mother Nature will have her way. Autumn is coming...

Less than three weeks away from the autumnal solstice and Halloween already calls. What spooky nights lie ahead is anyone's guess. The night is ready for her close-up.

How about you? Are you ready to end the summer and begin the third chapter of a four season year?

Have a great and wonderful day!

Up 'n at 'em

This morning was really pretty in the Sonoran Desert.

In the summer after staying up all night to avoid the extreme heat, I welcome the sun and all her glory. A few years back Venus and Jupiter were high in the eastern sky from 3am until the sun rose. My traveling companions.

Now the rotations have shifted. Venus comes up later about 5am in the east. Don't fret. Jupiter and Mars are not far behind and when cool October mornings come around, all three will be very, very close together in our sky. I cannot wait!

I have been updating my blogs, publishing some poems. I have been doing the bored to death thing. I get like this during summers. Summer is just not that exciting to me. I know we have the monsoon storms, but those only happen when the geoengineers are being stupid or generous. I cannot figure out which. ;)

I really do hate the toxic chemical laden, ecoterrorism being played out in our skies and no one seems to notice. I notice. I was raised with blue skies. I do not know what those lines are doing up there but to damage our ice caps and ozone lawyer. Yeah, and they say it is us. Nope! It is "them."

So if you can wake up extra early, especially at the end of October, the alignment of those three planets should be spectacular.

I for one cannot wait to fill up my camera's memory with the memory of a life lived.

Have a great and wonderful day!

Hot, Dry, and Sunny with a Touch of the Holidays

The desert is a strange place to live.

Heat and monsoon storms can make the summer months nearly unbearable. The rest of the year, except for six weeks in the winter, makes up for this hot uncomfortable weather. I for one cannot wait for autumn.

I have been searching for a way to be celebratory in the fall without falling into the religious/consumer trappings of the modern world.

If you want to give thanks or presents, why is it only on designated holidays?

Governments or churches should not be setting the standard. As a free thinking adult, I should be setting my own course. I should be my own role model.

So as the heat lingers I have been plotting my days of celebration for this autumn. From simple meteor showers to feasts, my non-conformist ways should not make my life dull or uninviting.

If you could make your own holiday schedule, what would it be?

Have a great and wonderful day!

Tomorrow will be 1m29s shorter

Autumn cometh!

October is my favorite time of year, so I will post how the days get shorter in anticipation of fall.

What is disturbing is that stores are already placing their Halloween items out. I do not believe autumn should start at the end of July. I don't believe Xmas shopping should happen until the Monday after Thanksgiving.

It feels that Americans have gotten away from the joy of the holidays. Halloween is to dress up and spend time with your friends. Children should believe October 31st is a magical night that will give them memories for a lifetime.

Thanksgiving should be a time of celebration and giving thanks. Gratitude for all the sacrifices people have made to make America great, while not forgetting the terrible things that befell the First Nations who are now on reservations.

Christmas and other end of year holidays should not come at the expense of other holidays or traditions. I mean, really, do we need Black Friday?

No, course we do not.

What we need are a nation of people who care and have moral/ethical behavior. A 99c flat screen tv is not worth the time a father or mother has to be at work to serve you and be away from their kids during the Thanksgiving holiday.

We should be paying a fair wage so no one has to work on the holidays. Or, receive food stamps. Or, live out of their vehicle.,

While I love October, Halloween, the holidays make me think about how I conduct myself around the holiday season.

What will you do to make the season brighter for someone else?
