Undawnted's Summer Time Music 2025 is Heating Up with New Hits by DL Mullan!

Are you ready for a music revolution?

DL Mullan of Undawnted and Sonoran Dawn Studios is right there with you. For years, the music industry has been ruled by corporations, experimenting on the population. From sexualized, violent rap lyrics and pop songs that have suicidal and other phrases inserted for no reason but to social engineer young people.

Such as:

Livin' La Vida Loca
Ricky Martin

She'll make you live her crazy life, but she'll take away your pain
Like a bullet to your brain

Who wants to sing-along to: “like a bullet to your brain”?

Can't artists do better?

_____

The Problem

Artists can create better music, but no one will pay them to do the right thing. No corporation, NGO, or government can make money off a stable, content populace.

If you are having a bad day, corporatized music isn't designed to better mental health.

If you want to rebel, the gang violence pushed in lyrics is just going to end you up in prison.

We need a solution to stop the for-profit pipeline living-off/creating people's suffering.

_____

The Solution

As consumers, we can change the industry, one song and artist at a time. Find new artists and their creations on SoundCloud and other apps.

Poetry is personal.

Shouldn't your music be too?

Undawnted Interviews Chris Barili, Day Three of the WordCrafter Shadow Blade Book Blog Tour

Interview with Author Chris Barili

What makes this book (Shadow Blade) a story that impelled you to write it?

I developed Shadow Blade based on an exercise in a class on researching for fiction during my MFA studies at Western State Colorado University. The professor gave us an in-class assignment to take a word commonly used in our chosen genre and do ten minutes of research on it. I chose “Assassin,” and the history of that word was so interesting that when I left class that day, I knew I would be writing it as a possible thesis. It has everything a fantasy story needs. There’s adventure, romance, deception, heroics, and of course, at the center of it all, magic.

The original “assassins” were a small sect of muslim fundamentalists controlling portions of northern Persia during the crusades. They were said to have been addicted to hashish, which their leader used to make them invulnerable, and to keep them absolutely loyal. My immediate thought was, “what if they (the Denari Lai) weren’t addicted to a drug, but to magic? What if that power came from their god, Nishi, but was doled out by their leader, the Chargh Lai, and used to not only make them successful, but to spy on them, control them, and ultimately, if they disobeyed too much, to end them? The very next question that came to me was, “What if one such assassin is sent to kill a princess, but falls in love with her and has to battle with his faith to determine his future?

So you have this dynamic where magic is like a drug that is used to control Denari Lai, and suddenly one of those assassins finds something so powerful that it threatens his devotion to his God. What’s stronger for him, the love of his God, or his love for the princess.

Which, if any, of the characters do you identify with the most?

That’s a tough one. I think I’d have to say perhaps Captain Marwan Bauti—the man vowed to protect Princess Makari. He knows something is wrong, that Ashai is a threat, but no one will listen to him.

What is it about the magic genre that attracts you to write it?

The fantasy genre has always attracted me for a couple of reasons. First, it tends to draw a pretty straight line between good and evil, which I think we’ve lost the ability to do in our world today. And secondly, just about anything is possible in the fantasy genre, meaning all kinds of exciting things can happen.

Is Book 2 of the series on the way? How many books of the series do
you plan on publishing?

Shadow Blade is currently plotted out to be a trilogy. I am about halfway done the rough draft of book two (untitled), but I am working on the next Hell’s Marshal book at this time, so it’ll be a bit before book two is out.

What themes resonate with this story, yourself, and your readers?

If I start sounding off what themes are in this story, it’s likely to act as a spoiler for how it ends. So on this one, I’ll plead the Fifth.

About the Book

Ashai Larish is an assassin from the brutal Denari Lai order. Religious zealots, Denari Lai are kept loyal through an addiction to the same magic that makes them unstoppable. They have become the primary weapon for the nation of Nishi'iti, and in a hundred years, they have never failed.

Until now. Ashai must kill Pushtani King Abadas Damar and his daughter/heir, Makari. He infiltrates the king's inner circle, putting him in the perfect place to strike, with only Captain Bauti of the Royal Guard at all suspicious of Ashai's intent.

Except Ashai has fallen for Makari and cannot complete the hit. When a second Denari Lai kills the King, Ashai finds himself fighting for Makari's life instead of taking it. To make matters worse, the order cuts him off from his magic, leaving him weakened and in withdrawal. Meanwhile, far north in the Pushtani mines that border Nishi'iti, a slave named Pachat learns that his love, a hand slave to Makari, died at the hands of a Denari Lai assassin. His grief ignites a slave rebellion, and Pachat becomes the unwilling leader of the revolt. Urged on by Nishi'iti guerrillas, the rebellion sweeps across the borderlands, threatening to erupt into all-out war. Yet all Pachat wants is to avenge his beloved's death by killing the assassin, so he walks away from the rebellion to seek when it needs him most.

As Pachat makes off for the capital of Dar Tallus, Ashai is forced to rely on that city's organized crime gang to hide from the second assassin, and from Bauti's guards. Despite his best efforts to hide it, Makari discovers Ashai's true identity, and suddenly, he finds himself without her love, without his faith, and without the Denari Lai. At rock bottom, he doubts he can do anything but cause more damage.

Can Ashai kill the second assassin and win back Makari's love? Will Pachat gain the revenge he so lustily seeks?

Press Release: Introducing The Fell Werewolf Series

With two vampire trilogies being published on Undawnted (In the Name of Blood and Nocturnal Redemption), a werewolf trilogy makes a great balance for the Legacy Universe.

The Fell book series has three webbed narratives: A Known Wolf, A Lone Wolf, and A Savage Wolf.

This story follows a young woman on a quest for adventure:

Urban explorer and documentarian, Morgan Middleton, lives an exciting but solitary life filming her adventures throughout the western world.

A chance encounter with a stranger, Gabriel Vuksian, sets her on a different path. As she tracks him down, she meets David Vincent instead. He wants to hire her as a private contractor with his company.

As Morgan and David's professional life draws them closer together, their feelings for each other grows. David's security chief then kidnaps and hands her over to Gabriel. In their interactions, she discovers that the men are estranged brothers, and the attacks their businesses have endured is supernatural in origin.

The Fell has found them, and it will not stop until this ferocious wolf spirit is appeased.

But will Morgan step out of her preconceptions about the nature of reality and dare the fates to delve into the exploration of a lifetime?

Would she allow herself to be a known wolf?

In this new trilogy, the story becomes another addition to the Legacy Universe.

Submission Release: The Initiation Submitted to Midnight Oil Anthology

The short story, The Initiation, was submitted to the Midnight Oil Anthology published by WordCrafter Press. The narrative leaves off where The Reality Hackers (Visions anthology, as well as Sonoran Dawn Studios novelette) did. John and Elleanor Chisum have been murdered, leaving their three children orphaned.

The Chisums' daughter, Eliza, is finding her first year in college a challenge. When she writes a research paper for her introduction to physics course, the professor gives her a failing grade. Like her mother, Eliza sees beyond the five senses as a conduit of pure consciousness.

The Initiation also provides a cameo from the popular character, Sarah Mitchell, from Mangled (Midnight Roost anthology, as well as Sonoran Dawn Studios' novelette) and Hode: Be Honor in Your Wars (Sonoran Dawn Studios' novel).

This story is its own stand-alone novelette for publication through the Legacy Universe next year.

Join all the character excitement and bring the story to life!

DL Mullan has been a musical wonder and performer for decades.

A teacher noticed her abilities on her dynamic, and technically perfect, first use of the violin at age ten during class. She was rushed into Competitive Orchestra the next school year.

After switching schools, her junior high music teacher discerned her aptitude in class. As Ms. Mullan played the violin and the school only offered band and choir, she believed her musical calling would go unanswered. Fortunately, the band instructor loved the idea of having a string instrumentalist. DL Mullan was the first violinist invited into the group and seated in the flute section. She spent two years in band, which she became a magnet for other string-playing students, as well as succeeding to second chair.

Her Arts Magnet high school was a different matter. A violin in a Marching Band was not a match made. Without any background in singing, Ms. Mullan entered the world of choir. During her time in Concert Choir, she taught herself the piano, some drums, and took guitar lessons to expand her aspirations. Upon developing her voice, she discovered that she was an operatic lyric soprano with at least eight octaves at her disposal. She sang in theater productions, graduations, and other activities from high school and throughout college.

DL Mullan received her music letter in high school. In addition, she has written music for competitions, competed in talent shows, won an award for her solo singing, as well as maintained her lyricist skills as an award-winning poet. With her classical training, as well as her grandfather's jazz pianist genes, both musical legacies will be reflected in her pieces.

Undawnted Interviews Dawn Pisturino, Day Seven of the WordCrafter Poetry Treasures 5: Small Pleasures Book Blog Tour

WordCrafter Poetry Treasures 5: Small Pleasures

About Poetry Treasures 5: Small Pleasures

Open the cover, and you will discover Poetry Treasures from the guests on Robbie Cheadle's 2024: Treasuring Poetry blog series on Writing to be Read.

Introduction

Welcome, Undawntables to the Poetry Treasures 5: Small Pleasures blog tour. This year, I and several other poets created a wonderful poetry anthology delving into the theme: Small Pleasures.

Dawn Pisturino is one of my compatriot poets in this publication. She is a beautiful writer with a bright future in the creative writing field. I interviewed Ms. Pisturino about her poetry.

Please welcome her to Undawnted with our warm and gracious hospitality.

_____

Interview with Dawn Pisturino

Every poet has a favorite poet, but do you have a favorite song? Songs are poetry set to music. Tell me yours and why it is your favorite.

I love all kinds of music, from opera to heavy metal, so I don’t really have a favorite song. Every song touches me in some unique way. Some of my favorite rock songs are “Nights in White Satin” by the Moody Blues and “A Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. Abbey Road by the Beatles and The Wall by Pink Floyd are among my favorite rock albums. Opera-wise, I’ve liked the Gershwin classic, Porgy and Bess, since I was a child. I enjoy singers like Enya, Billie Holiday, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Michael Jackson, Sting, and Roberta Flack. My favorite classical composers are Wagner, Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Debussy, Satie, Tchaikovsky, and Grieg.

Poetry can be found in anything, and since a picture is worth a thousand words, what school of art (impressionism, expressionism, cubism, et al) inspires you to write poetry and why?

I rarely write poetry based on a photo or a piece of art. My favorite artists are the Italian Renaissance masters, like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. My poetry derives from my own emotions and imagination. Since I have a wide range of interests, I can always find something to write about.

If you have a favorite flower (it can be a tree), which one would you write a poem about?

I love daffodils and tulips, but purple irises are my favorite because they are delicate and fragile.

Tell me your poetic journey. Where did it start? Does it still influence you today?

I’ve been writing poetry since I was in third grade. My first poem was about spiders. I mainly grew up in the country, so I’ve always lived close to nature. As a teenager, I discovered the great English poets like Keats, Shelley, Tennyson, the Brownings, and Blake. Then, it was American poets like Whitman, Eliot, Cummings, and Millay. Although these poets still influence me, I spend more time reading contemporary poets.

Whatever else you would like to impart upon my readers.

I’ve published five poetry collections, all Amazon bestsellers and/or #1 Amazon New Releases. Ancient Voices: Poems About Ancient Egypt can now be pre-ordered on Amazon. The Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, paperback, and hardcover editions will be available on May 1, 2025. On pre-order, the collection has already achieved #1 Amazon New Release status in African Poetry and History of Egypt. Amazon Blurb “The Ancient Egyptians loved life and celebrated it with joy. Their deepest desire was to live an honorable life and achieve immortality in the afterlife, where they could exist in perfect harmony with the cosmic order and never experience pain, suffering, and hardship again. These original poems by Dawn Pisturino reflect the hopes and dreams of people who were not much different from us. They worked, loved, raised families, worshiped their gods, honored the dead, enjoyed festivals and celebrations, imbibed beer and wine, danced, sang, and played, aspired to better themselves, and appreciated the beauty and wonder of nature. Take a journey back in time to explore the
minds and hearts of the Ancient Egyptians.”

Deck the Halls with Yuletide Celebration!

As a gifted singer and musician, writing my own music for an album has been a dream of mine.

My disabling illness has kept me from what I love to do, but no longer. Technology has caught up to me, finally. In so, I have added Albums and Singles to my repertoire on the right-hand menu, as well as Undawnted's seasonal reads program.

The first album is called Yuletide Celebrations (playlist). Many classic and traditional songs are geared toward religions, but for those of us who are spiritual and revere the natural processes, there is little music for us during the holiday season. This album bridges that gap.

But the original music is for everybody

For example, one single off the album has already been released: Deck the Halls. I will be working on actual music videos in the near future. For now, enjoy a representative song for the album: fun, upbeat, and toe-tapper!

You won't be able to sit still with these re-imaged renditions, new lyrics, and positive vibe!

Have a great and safe holiday season!

Paul Kane's Drip Feed

Inspiration for “Drip Feed” by Paul Kane

I had so much fun writing ‘The White Lady’ for Kaye’s previous anthology, Midnight Roost, that when the opportunity to write something else for the next one in the series cropped up, I put my thinking cap on about another one.

‘Drip Feed’ is sort of the spiritual cousin to a story I wrote over a decade ago now, called ‘Rag & Bone’ – or at least the beginning of it is. First published in The Butterfly Man from PS Publishing, that one got picked up for Best New Horror so I’ve been trying to think of how to do something similar for a while now (although the two stories ended up being nothing alike really).

‘Rag & Bone’ begins with the main character hanging around in what he thinks is a serial killer’s lair, which is the conclusion Daniele in ‘Drip Feed’ also leaps to here. Both have twists about what’s actually going on, of course – it’s never as simple as just a ‘serial killer’ in one of my horrors – but in this case it was sort of influenced by the surge in spiking people’s drinks these days. We saw something about it on breakfast TV and I figured it would be appropriate in this tale.

There are bits that are nods to certain movies, and if you read ‘Drip Feed’ you’ll understand what those are and why I can’t mention them; Daniele herself has seen the films and although she can’t remember the titles, you’ll get where she’s coming from, or at least I hope you will.

I wanted to do a tale this time that offers a bit of light at the end of the tunnel, instead of that just being a train coming to run you over. There’s a glimmer at any rate, and that won’t spoil it for those of you who haven’t read it yet, because that’s not the full story by long chalk. The ending I think will still surprise you, as indeed it does Daniele.

It’s enjoyable sometimes to do a piece that’s self-contained. Something which, although a back history is hinted at, doesn’t contain huge amounts of mythology or whatever that you need to know. Just a beginning, middle and end. I also like doing stories that are circular, though I’m not entirely sure this one is. We definitely leave it in a place where things are going to continue on, but then that’s most tales anyway isn’t it – unless you end the world that is (and I’ve done that a few times too).

So sit back and read Daniele’s struggles to overcome her obstacles – her background, if not her predicament, are similar to mine; though in art and writing, rather than acting. Things are tough out there, and the only way to get through life is to become tougher.

If you can, that is.

Press Release: 12 Angry Dead Author Interviewed by Joseph Carrabis

12 Angry Dead is my short story for Tales from the Hanging Tree. Joseph Carrabis asked fellow "hangers," as he calls contributors, about my creative write for his website.

_____

What is this story about?

It is about:

When the souls of the wronged rise to avenge their premature deaths, is there anyone who can stand against them?

Marilla Gibbs, an heiress and a director of the historical museum, is a descendant of Aida Worthington, a victim of one of these unjust homicides. The mid-1800s was a tumultuous time, especially with figures like Josiah King, who took lives with impunity.

In the afterlife, his victims came together to form a jury. On All Hallows Eve, when the veil separating the living from the dead is at its thinnest, Aida and eleven other spirits took control of their descendants to confront their killer, who is now a seven-year-old boy.

With the aid of her assistant, Shaun, and Justin, the child's father, Marilla seeks to outmaneuver the twelve angry dead. Yet, will their combined efforts be sufficient to redirect the course from vengeance to authentic justice?

The trio soon realizes that no one can escape a past life.

Quote from the Interview

Real or not, there are tales from centuries hence and into the recent past that illustrate the horrors that humans can inflict on one another. 12 Angry Dead pursues the idea that karma follows us from lifetime to lifetime. Some karma is about balancing one experience with another. Not all karma is about revenge, as is espoused by the spiritual community. Karma ties an individual to energies that also restores them to their soul’s purpose.
