Review of The Ones that Stayed with Me

A poignant set of stories based in the healthcare industry. As a former caretaker who dealt with hospitals, doctors, nurses, and medical insurance for a relative, The Ones Who Stayed with Me is an enduring, loving, and yet at times, heart-breaking, memorable memoir of “Nurse Sammy.”

If you want to understand what healthcare staff like nurses go through, then don’t pass up the chance to read the reality.

______

About Nurse Sammy

Nurse Sammy has spent her life walking the quiet edges of human suffering and human grace. Long before she ever wore scrubs, she learned how to read a room by the way someone breathed and how to steady a shaking hand. How to listen to the stories people only tell when they think it might be their last night to say them. Nursing wasn’t a career she chose; it was the language her heart was already speaking.

She has worked in places where life is beginning, and in places where life is ending; in rooms lit by hope, and in rooms where grief hangs heavy in the doorway. Rehab centers, memory care halls, pediatric units, assisted living, private homes, wherever someone needed gentleness, she went. She became the one who held vigil, the one who noticed the quiet details, the one who stayed.

Her personal life has carried its own ache, abuse survived, love lost, a marriage that bruised the soul, another built from healing, and a grief that still hums beneath her ribs. She writes from the tender, broken places, from the nights she rebuilt herself alone, from the mornings she rose anyway. Her words are shaped by both the wounds and the resilience that followed.

The Ones Who Stayed With Me is her first published work, a collection of truths disguised as stories, honoring the people who left fingerprints on her life in ways they never saw. Her writing is soft but unflinching, honest but merciful, threaded with the belief that even in darkness, someone is always holding a light.

Nurse Sammy lives in the Pacific Northwest, where she continues to care, to witness, to learn, and to turn the hardest parts of her journey into something that might help someone else breathe a little easier.

Midnight Oil Anthology Presents: The Initiation, Part of the Quantum Consciousness Series

The short story, The Initiation, is published in Midnight Oil Anthology through WordCrafter Press.

The narrative leaves off where The Reality Hackers (Visions anthology, as well as Sonoran Dawn Studios novelette) did. The intriguing update reveals that John and Elleanor Chisum were murdered, leaving their three children orphaned.

The Chisums' daughter, Eliza, finds her first year in college a challenge. When she writes a research paper for her introduction to physics course, the professor gives her a failing grade. Like her mother, Eliza sees beyond the five senses as a conduit of pure consciousness. As she drifts through quantum consciousness, she learns of her past, new allies, and a dark threat behind another door to her future.

Enjoy a scene from The Initiation with this dramatic reading by DL Mullan:

The Initiation also provides a cameo from the popular character, Sarah Mitchell, from Mangled (Midnight Roost anthology, as well as Sonoran Dawn Studios' novelette) and Hode: Be Honor in Your Wars (Sonoran Dawn Studios' novel).

This story is its own stand-alone novelette for publication through the Legacy Universe next year.

Join all the character excitement and take a journey into the unknown.

Press Release: Introducing A Salt Pine Mystery Series: Want to Read about a Multigenerational Curse?

Hosting the interview portion of the Curses anthology blog tour was hexifying!

Even more invoking, the book cover was created by Undawnted's DL Mullan through a Sonoran Dawn Studios collaboration.
_____

What is a curse?

  1. a prayer or invocation for harm or injury to come upon one : imprecation
  2. : a profane or obscene oath or word
  3. : something that is cursed or accursed
  4. : evil or misfortune that comes as if in response to imprecation or as retribution
  5. : a cause of great harm or misfortune : torment
His fame turned out to be a curse, not a blessing.
_____

A Salt Pines Mystery

My short story, Kurst, published the year prior in Midnight Garden is based on an ancient curse. This submission cycle, I decided to be a reader and not a participant, since I wrote a story about the theme last year. I don't want to bore anyone!

Funny thing is, the initial story took on a life of its own. Now, Kurst is part of A Salt Pines Mystery trilogy of novelettes/novellas... so, altogether does that make a full novel then? We're going to find out!

The first story is Wallen. It's about Karen Kurst's ancestor, who started on this journey to solve the homicidal monster mystery. Next, is Kurst, about Karen, who you all met in Midnight Garden. The last story is Bear. The intrepid guide of the mystery.

Or, is he?

Just adding to the mystery!

______

About Kurst

Karen Kurst comes into the legal possession of her deceased grandmother's cabin in Salt Pines, Arizona. As she delves into the secrets of the quaint mountain village, she discovers that there is more than meets the eye. A mysterious creature roams the woods, a blended cryptid: Elemental, Sasquatch, and Skinwalker. The only way to contain this entity is through a magical spell passed down by her ancestor, Ralph Wallen II. Teaming up with the local indigenous sheriff, Karen is determined to break the family curse.

However, the question remains - will she have to sacrifice her own life to protect her newfound community?

Undawnted Press Release: Saving the Conjuring House for Future Generations

Undawnted and the Paranormal

As a paranormal explorer, investigator, and researcher for over two decades, I support the saving of the Conjuring House.

Over the years, I visited various locations and have great stories to tell about them, including: The Whaley House, Star of India, and the now converted to an office building, the Santa Rita Hotel. I was immersed, so much so, that I became a horror journalist for the local speculative fiction society and wrote about my adventures to haunted locations.

The byline, as well as other columns (e.g., books, reviews, featured article, etc.), earned me three consecutive Media Press Badges at Comic-Con San Diego before my body collapsed due to my disabling health conditions. That's plural. I fight for my life every day, but I continue to support others' efforts to bring about positive outcomes in the world.

As I learned about myself, I am a sensitive to energies. A light in the dark. Understandably, the paranormal has been a constant companion throughout my life. At first, I did not understand the occurrences that I experienced from childhood, youth, and into adulthood until I confronted them. Now, I am at peace with the unknown.

However, as a history major, I would love for this home to be saved. It predates the establishment of the United States. The home and property are a treasure. History, if possible, should be salvaged, not destroyed.

If you can manage a few dollars, then please donate to this incredible cause: The Conjuring House -Together We Make History.

Thank you!

How it all began was with a plea from Ms. Perron herself to Jason Hawes:

The Gofundme Drive

When I happened upon Jason Hawes of Ghost Hunters fame's video eight seconds after it debuted on YouTube, I rushed over and put in my $10 worth.

______

The Conjuring House -Together We Make History

Hello, I'm Jason Hawes.
Many of you may know me from Ghost Hunters.
I've dedicated my life to exploring the unknown and trying to make this field accessible for everyone.

I have never wanted to buy the Conjuring House. I’ve publicly stated this many times over the years, and I meant it.

But, I have been contacted by past owners, employees, residents, all begging me to step in and try to save this property from being exploited and priced out of the range of the majority of people.

If you are unaware, The Conjuring House is going up for auction on October 31'st.

If we don’t step in, there’s a very real chance it will be bought by some whose only goal is to turn it into a money making machine.

This isn’t just another piece of real estate. This house is an important part of paranormal history.

It's a place that has drawn all types of investigators. Believers, Non believers, skeptics, debunkers and those that are simply curious from all over the world.

For decades, it has connected people. It has sparked curiosity, debate, and exploration. It’s a place that has helped keep history alive, and it deserves to be preserved, not exploited.

I’ve decided to act because so many have asked for my help.
I believe that as a community, we can make a difference.

I’ve created this GoFundMe to raise funds needed to save the Conjuring House at auction.

I’ll personally add as much as possible to give us the best possible chance to succeed.

If we’re successful, the Conjuring House will be placed into an LLC and those from this properties history will help run it and keep it open.

Those who know and respect the true history of the property. They will oversee its day-to-day operations, keeping it open for tours, investigations, and anyone who wants to experience it.

I want to be clear:
I’m not looking to profit from this gofundme, and I have no plans to run the daily operations. This will cost me money!

I’m stepping in now for only one reason, because people I care deeply for asked me to.

Lets try to preserve this house and protect its legacy for the paranormal community and for future generations, and to keep it from being priced out of the majority of peoples ability.

This truly feels like the last chance to save the Conjuring House. If we don’t act now, we may lose it forever to some that want it to be a money making machine, who won’t honor its history or its significance.

I can’t do this alone. To succeed, I'm asking everyone who cares about this property, and about what it represents, to step up and help.

This could be historic!

Together, we can protect this piece of history and keep it accessible for all who want to walk through its doors.

Please consider donating today. Every contribution brings us one step closer to making sure the Conjuring House remains what it was always meant to be — a place to learn from, experience, and share for generations to come.

How the Funds Will Be Used

Every dollar raised in this campaign will go directly toward purchasing the Conjuring House at auction.

If we are successful at the auction, the property will be placed into an LLC and be run by those from its history that are dedicated to preserving it.

I want to be absolutely clear: I am not seeking to profit from this Gofundme.
My role here is clear. I have been asked to help save this property by Andrea Perron, and many others around the globe.

All I can do try!

This is a big undertaking, and I am willing to reconsider my position and help do what I can. This will take a historic movement!

Together, We can make sure it remains open for tours, investigations, and visitors for generations to come.

If we do not win the auction, Refunds will be granted "unless a donor chooses to have their contribution directed toward other historic preservation efforts".

If we succeed and raise more than what is needed to purchase the property, any surplus will be used for restoration, repairs, maintenance, and updates that keep the history and significance of the house alive.

No raffles, No sweepstakes, No giveaways, or returns on investment are offered in exchange for any donations made to this GoFundMe.

About  Curses: Chronicles of Darkness

There are all types of curses.

Cursed places, cursed items, cursed people, cursed families.

Eleven tantalizing tales of curses and the cursed. Includes stories by Kaye Lynne Booth, Molly Ertel, C.R. Johansson, Robert White, Joseph Carrabis, Paul Kane, Danaeka Scrimshaw, Abe Margel, and Denise Aparo.

Interview with Danaeka Scrimshaw

What type of Curse is your favorite to write about: blaspheme, afflict, imprecate, or torment? Hex or jinx? By spell, object, or charm?

I like to write about jinx afflictions through objects.

Are Curses forever?

I don't think curses are forever.

If you ever had the chance to use a Curse in real life, would you?

I am a witch and would never dabble in black magic.

Do you believe that in order for a Curse to work that the target of that Curse has to believe in it?

Not necessarily, but I think they need to be indifferent to curses and not, say, absolutely certain they don't work.

What swear word is your go-to Curse?

Fuck

_____

Interview with Robert White

If you ever had the chance to use a Curse in real life, would you?

One-hundred percent yes. (I provide details of the circumstance below as evidence of a warranted curse.)

In general, I take Marcus Aurelius’ advice not to pay attention to what other people think. In these times, where every fool with a smart phone believes in his or her self-importance, it is difficult and so I find that he bears re-reading. This passage is from his Meditations, Book XI, the translation is, I think, Victorian era and a little archaic: “ . . . when you are highly indignant or actually suffering, that man's life is but a moment, and in a little we are one and all laid low in death.” This too: “how much more grievous are what fits of anger and the consequent sorrows bring than the actual things are which produce in us those angry fits and sorrows.”

Failure to live right, morally speaking, as he says in so many sections makes one “a brigand and a shifty character.” I admit it: I am weak. That woman I describe below needs a curse attached to her.

What swear word is your go-to Curse?

“Fuck you!” I used it just today on some nitwit in this backasswards town I call home. I had dropped off my wife’s car at the gas station and was walking the mile home. At one of the busier intersections, I stopped at the crosswalk, waiting. The light just changed to green, giving the cars in the left turning lane the right to go. I watched the car stop. I assumed the driver was being courteous because I obviously had the right of way as a pedestrian. I waved my thanks to the driver. As soon as I reached the opposite side of the street, I saw the male passenger grinning. Then I heard the driver, a woman, yell: “I’ve got the right of way, asshole!” Ergo, my go-to curse. She yelled the same back to me in a shrill voice as she was turning the corner, only proving what I’d already suspected: she was a lowlife piece of trash (and ignorant of traffic laws to boot).

Now, if I could put a curse on her, I would without hesitation.

Anything else that you would like to add about yourself, your story, or books?

My bad mood resulting from that little contretemps at the streetlight this morning notwithstanding, I did have some good news about a pair of unpublished works yesterday I’d despaired of ever seeing print. I wrote Easy Money, a first-person crime novella, and a collection of seven private-eye stories featuring my first series detective Thomas Haftmann six or seven years ago. The publisher who had done the first four Haftmann books sold its “library” to another indie press in New York. I sent emails asking what the status of those books was for years and gave up. Then the email from the publisher arrived—with the book cover and the formatted text. I could not have been more pleased. That, by the way, was like having a curse lifted from my shoulders.
