___________

“The Urbexer’s Girl”

Not that long ago, I read about a Cleveland high-school girl who fell to her death. She was intelligent, well-liked by classmates, and had a gymnastics background, if memory serves. She did handstands on building edges for fun with a boyfriend filming her. She would post these to her social pages for her friends. The abandoned grain clusters on Old River Road are still standing, although on the verge of collapse. This area today is known as The Flats, a popular college-bar scene on the west side of downtown Cleveland extending down to the Cuyahoga River, once notorious for catching fire. There is also one in Collinwood owned by Rockefeller & Co., the most prominent member of “Millionaire’s Row” from the city’s glory days.

On her last day alive, she was on top of one of these derelict elevators doing the kind of stunts she always did for posting to her social media later. This was shortly before the terms “urbexer” and “urban exploring” became as well-known as they are today in popular culture.

I was thinking about her while watching a YouTuber’s uploaded video post filmed from an abandoned Ford Motor factory or powerhouse in or near Detroit. He sounded more like a trail guide from the national park service than someone who took death-defying chances. He videoed the decayed structure from the ground floor, commented throughout while his camera canned the graffiti on the walls left by taggers and ground debris from squatters. The biggest chance he took was to trespass into the building past a gate. I made my character Rory envy him for the large number of followers he had, whereas he always took risks in his explorations, yet didn’t have the internet popularity of other urbexers.

That YouTube vlog brought back some memories of my youth when my friends and I used to explore a derelict textile building in my neighborhood that we called “the Sweater Factory.”  Breaking into the first floor was no feat because nothing was secured or locked. Doors were pried open or missing. We jumped through holes in the floorboards to crawl from room to room oblivious of any rats we might encounter. The top floor was reached via wobbly metal stairs through an open door. We looked out over the harbor from an intact roof and even filmed our “World War II” movies with my cousin’s Super 8 camera.

The middle floor, however, was the one that stuck in my memories. Every window broken, the massive black spinning jennies looking the same as when the factory operated back in the nineteenth century. We played a game by climbing onto the eight-foot open windows to jump to a tree branch. It was stupid because the trees that grew alongside the factory were wild sumac, dense with water, with supple branches so flimsy that you could snap them off. We used them to whip rocks and the sides of the building; their leaves left green smears on the red-brick walls.

Most sumac were short, stunted, a few poked branches through the broken windows. This one tree, however, was a good twenty-, twenty-five feet tall with branches thick enough for climbing.  One boy named Jimmy enrolled in my elementary school after the year had begun. New to the neighborhood, he was a small, red-haired kid with freckles spattered across his nose, and he was friendly and agile. He had taken my spot on the football team. Jimmy would show off by jumping from the ledge to the branch and hanging there one-armed, scratching himself under the armpit while making Ooooh-Oooh noises like a cartoon monkey.

Below him were piles of broken concrete with rebar sticking out, rusted cans and broken bottles from Depression-era bums that used to hang out there to drink. Falling into that rubble might not have been fatal, but it would have guaranteed a trip to the hospital. Because Jimmy had replaced me on my eighth-grade football team, I felt a surge of envy mixed with something else—a darker impulse. In other words, I wouldn’t have been traumatized if he fell and severely injured himself.

That rotting building became the setting for three other published short stories: “The Girl from the Sweater Factory,” another ghost story in a horror zine; a drabble (“The Urbexer Decides”) in Punk Noir; and a tale about a body buried under the floorboards titled “A Serenade for Rats” for a crime-fiction blog. The Hosea S. Johnson textile factory on Hulbert Avenue in my hometown ended business in the 1920’s and was demolished decades ago, yet it provided me seeds that grew and left some still scratching away in my memory bank.

So, the legend my story comes from is the ghost girl of Cleveland.

Tell us in the comments which legend this story is associated with to claim puzzle piece 7.

About Robb T. White

Robb White lives in Northeastern Ohio. He is a Derringer-nominated author of genre fiction and three series detectives: Thomas Haftmann, Raimo Jarvi, and Jade Hui. Betray Me Not was selected for distinction by the Independent Fiction Alliance in 2022. _____

About Legends: Monsters that go Bump in the Night

Legends take many forms, but most carry a warning within. For instance, stories of monsters such as the Chupacabra, Snallygasters, and Windigos were told to warn children to behave themselves. The tale of the ghost girl who haunts buildings in Cleveland, is a warning to daredevils, who would chance their lives and safety in old derelict buildings. And Trooper 666 is a deterrent against drunk and dangerous driving. The angel of death and gilgul offers lessons to be learned about our spiritual lives. And any one of the monsters found between these pages could decide to follow you home.

These diverse shiver-inducing tales introduce readers to ghosts and monstrous creatures, which each hold a certain sense of justice. Introduced by multi-genre author Kaye Lynne Booth, these stories are a celebration of legends of old, and some new ones, too, but there are no happy endings.

Featuring stories by Kaye Lynne Booth, Abe Margel, Chris Barili, Sara W. McBride, C.R. Johansson, Rebecca M. Senese, Danaeka Scrimshaw, Robb T. White, DL Mullan and Joseph Carrabis.

__________

“It Was No Stroll In The Park”, by Abe Margel

My story, ‘It Was No Stroll in the Park’, combines the Jewish notion of gigul, the reincarnation of souls, with one of a trouble making reincarnate in 1950s Toronto.

Sraga, the reincarnate, complains to Mendel, the protagonist, there has been a mistake or he would not have found himself wandering Toronto’s streets. Mendel is a young thug living in the then poor Jewish neighbourhood of Kensington Market. Sraga gives Mendel a lot of grief and Mendel would desperately like to be rid of the strange little man.

Tell us in the comments which legend this story is associated with to claim puzzle piece 8.

___________

Wrap Up

That’s it for today’s tour stop. We hope you enjoyed Robb T. White’s inspiration and Abe Margel’s Promo. Don’t forget to pick out the legend each was based on and put your answers in the comments. Each correct answer earns a piece to the puzzle, and the more pieces you have, the better your chances of winning a free copy of Legends.

Also, don’t forget to get those Mustang pictures in to try and match the car in Chris Barili’s “The Legend of Trooper 666” story for a chance to win a signed print copy of the book. (Available to U.S. residents only due to the expense of International shipping.)

Winners will be announced in a special post on Sunday, on Writing to be Read.

Pop in for tomorrow’s tour stop over at Writing to be Read where Kaye Lynne Booth will be hosting a guest post from contributing author Sara W. McBride about the wonderful contributors to the Legends anthology, and sharing a reading from her story, “The Last Stage”.

ABOUT DANIEL J. COX

Daniel J. Cox (Dan) is a professor of Psychiatry, Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center and a member of the Center for Diabetes Technology. He is a longstanding investigator of behavioral diabetes- how behavior affects diabetes and how diabetes affects behavior. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and industry (LifeScan, Abbott, DexCom, Lilly).

In 2010 he shifted his research focus from type 1 to type 2 diabetes (T2D) following his own diagnosis of T2D. He was not optimistic about losing weight and was not thrilled about a lifetime of medication, so he developed an alternative and effective way of managing T2D. Glucose Everyday Matters focuses on preventing high blood glucose (BG) by choosing foods that do not raise BG much and by lowering high BG with physical activity. Since an initial diagnostic A1c of 10.3 (reflecting a three-month BG average), GEM has put his diabetes in remission-lowered his A1c below 6.5 with no medication. This transformation was achieved with significant critique, support, and help from his wife Debbie.

__________

The Ask

Fighting Through the Hardest Battle of My Life

I’ve faced haunted houses, abandoned homes, and shadows most people never see. But this time… the battle isn’t in a house. It’s inside me.

Over the past several weeks, everything changed. After eight intense weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, I am now in the next phase of aggressive cancer treatment — ongoing IV hydration, therapy, labs, and constant monitoring as my body works to recover. Appointments still fill most days, and complications have required repeated hospital stays. This is not a short chapter. It’s an ongoing fight.

It’s exhausting.

_____

The Fight I’m Facing

Multiple hospitalizations from treatment-related infections have already set me back — each one physically draining and financially devastating. With my immune system weakened by treatment, even minor complications can become serious very quickly.

But there is hope.

My doctors believe this cancer is highly treatable and curable. A recent PET scan showed it has not spread. That light at the end of this long corridor is real — but the road there is still demanding, and I am taking it one day at a time.

_____

The Financial Impact

Cancer doesn’t just attack the body — it disrupts everything around it.

In the earliest weeks of this fight, I was between insurance coverages. During that time, biopsies, surgery, scans, blood panels, specialist visits, and critical testing had to move forward immediately — regardless of coverage. There was no option to wait for insurance to catch up. The cancer didn’t pause, and neither could the procedures needed to diagnose and begin treatment. Those early months alone created thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket medical expenses before my current insurance was fully in place.

Now, even with coverage active, the costs continue to add up quickly.

I need help keeping my home stable and ensuring my boys are cared for while I focus on recovery.

_____

I am setting a goal of $55,000, which will help cover:

Medical costs & treatment:

• High monthly insurance premiums

• Large deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums

• Ongoing treatment-related care, hydration, labs, and monitoring

• Hospital bills from multiple treatment-related infections

• Medications, medical supplies, and recovery-related expenses

Support & household:

• Occasional in-home help on the hardest recovery days

• Lost income from being unable to work consistently

• Everyday living expenses that don’t pause during treatmentT

This isn’t about one single bill. It’s about keeping our home steady, covering the gaps cancer treatment has created, and allowing me to focus fully on healing.

_____

Why I’m Asking for Help

For years, whether you know me from Haunted Saginaw, my films, or my music, I’ve worked to share stories and connect with fans and the community. Now, I need your support in my own fight.

I am not stopping. I still plan to release a new film this fall, and I am working on another album. Creating has always been how I move through darkness — and I refuse to let this chapter take that from me.

_____

How You Can Help

If you are able to contribute, any amount truly helps. If donating isn’t possible, sharing this page means more than you know. Every message, every prayer, and every act of support strengthens this fight.

I am walking through a corridor of cancer treatment, fighting to stay strong for my boys. Every donation, every share, and every word of encouragement helps me keep moving forward.

Every contribution matters. Thank you for being part of this fight.

— Steve

Reviewed by You: In the Name of Blood: Vampires are Relative

About In the Name of Blood

"In the Name of Blood" is a dark fiction novel that explores themes of family and conflict within a vampiric universe, focusing on a character named Riley who becomes entangled in a dangerous situation involving two vampires. The story is noted for its vivid descriptions and engaging characters, making it an intriguing read for fans of the genre.

For more on information on Vampires are Relative, visit Undawnted's In the Name of Blood page.

  • In the Name of Blood: Vampires are Relative novel is available as a stand-alone book, and published by Sonoran Dawn Studios/Publishing, and Undawnted.

_____

The Review

Kaye Lynne Booth, Writing to be Read

Lured into a conflict between two vampires, one a viciously insane vampiric killer who thrives on torturing her, Riley is determined to see Wilhelm stopped at any cost. The other vampire, Julian, is after the same prey, placing them both on the same side, and he is equally determined to keep Riley from harm’s way because they are related. This is book one in Mullan’s Legacy Universe series, and I got the distinct impression that Riley will play an important role in something much bigger in future books.

Mullan doesn’t use dialog tags, which makes it difficult to know who is speaking at times, but probably reads aloud smoother. Perhaps she plans to do audiobook versions in the future. Her characters are larger than life, and you can almost feel Riley’s pain from Mullan’s vivid descriptions. I’m not sure I buy into vampires with governing bodies, as these seem to, but I can accept it for what it is and immerse myself in the world for a time.

An interesting take on the vampiric universe. I give In the Name of Blood Vampires are Relative four quills.

Read her review of In the Name of Blood: Vampires are Relative on Writing to be Read.

Undawnted Movie Review: The Wrecking Crew

The Wrecking Crew

Amazon Prime's The Wrecking Crew is a fun, but foul-mouthed, sexually- innuendoed, and massively violent romp.

It's nostalgic for GenXers who grew up with Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, Beverly Hills Cop, and other high-octane, violent action, cop comedies.

The soundtrack added to the movie's ambiance. Spicy.

If you love buddy movies, then this one is for you.

______

Trigger Warning

The film is strange as it casts everyone that is not of Hawaiian descent, except for Jason Momoa, in the leads, as native Hawaiians. There are lots of New Zealanders, though. Another weird point for a movie that makes fun of all things WOKE, it sure is pretty woke: the white police officer (the Hawaiian officers were on vacation?) is an angry idiot and the mega bad guy is a white guy (Danish actor), whose family owned sugar cane farms (slave owner?), and culturally appropriates Japanese culture.

And his army comprises of all white men.

So weird.

Was this movie funded by the CCP? The Yakuza, Japanese, criminal element is used. I ask, because there are more Japanese descendants than Chinese in Hawaii, so wouldn't this alienate the movie's base in the state? Or, was it not to alienate China's culture appetite for movies that politically keeps the brainwashing of their people in place? Just sayin', the Chinese New Year was a background scene... it's so weird.

Anyway, the Woke ideology hates all things white... except for their cellular phones, attire, motorcycles, homes, electricity, law enforcement, and military veterans. You know, all the comforts of modern society and culture.

So, interesting how that all works.

Wink, wink.

_____

The Gist (Spoiler Alert)

If you ignore all the Woke idiocy, because it looks like Amazon is trying to play both sides in the entertainment game, The Wrecking Crew is fun. Two estranged half-brothers meet up after 20 years to solve their father's murder.

They work through their father figure issues as well as the brotherly ones of anger, hate, jealousy, and abandonment. The duo, James/Jimmy and Jonny, hammer the bad guys and each other until they realize they are more alike than different. The men release their childish misgivings, because working together makes them invincible.

Just in time for the plot twist.

In the end, the brothers opt for the $12 million in Cayman Island bank account money than getting justice for Jonny's murdered mother. That seemed like a sexist ending.

_____

The Rating

I enjoyed this movie. It went through the Hero's Journey for each brother, including saving the damsels in distress. If it weren't for the Woke placements of hate whitey, I would give this film 4.8 stars out of 5. Yet, the politics of hate were embedded into the screenplay.

If the entertainment industry wants to make the point that minority groups (which are not demographically minorities in any way, if you look at world populations) can carry a film and be successful in "white" cultures, then they also have to respect the culture with which they wish to be successful in. That part is still missing.

As a move goer, I could give a rat's ass who is in the director's chair, or on the screen as long as you give me a great script, acting, music/soundtrack, editing, and production value.

When the entertainment industry loses sight of having fun, in order to push a political/social agenda, that's when they lose long-time movie critics like me.

But the script is near perfection, the dialogue is on point with little straying from the plot. It would have been so much better without the Woke ideology. The acting was great. The profanity was a little much, too much in places.

Script\editing discrepencies:

How did the casino building plans get saved from the vehicle bout with the Yakuza? Did Jonny's cousin get all that information from her work at the governor's officer?

Jonny's wounds heal in record time.

And, when did the other USB drive get returned? Watch until the end.

4.0/5.0 or 8.0/10.0 Rating
