Ogham, Ancient Celtic Language, and Roben Hode

Ah, research.

Writing is about reading, investigation, and fact finding expeditions. The internet has given writers a one stop shop to look up history, science, and even science fiction. When writing a historical character, a write needs as much in depth knowledge of that era as possible.

In the case of Hode, Roben is a modern version of the mythical persona. So the legend is more of a set of guidelines than rules. However, supporting characters like Marian can have ties to the past as much or more than a modern retelling's protagonist. Marian in the first novel states she has family ties to the old Celtic ways of magick as a priestess. These characters usually have tattoos or brands, one of which Roben notices on Marian.

So what does a writer do for the second novel? Well she researches the Ogham. Ogham is a series of lines that equate to the phonetic alphabet. We write in English which is denoted in Latin characters to convey our message. Lines like Runes and the Ogham did the same thing when reading and writing was less necessary or available to the public.

But I like taking the concept to the next level. I not only translated my character's information to Ogham, I looked up the Ancient Celtic word for the item I wanted translated.

So in modern vernacular, Blood is fuil in Gaelic. Fuil is this set of marks in the Ogham:

Will this be of use in the next novel, I hope so. Research takes hours and sometimes days/weeks to complete on something as simple as an ancient word and its non-Latin transliteration.

Luckily research into the past can be done online instead of in a room full of musty, dusty tomes.

What research have you conducted to create depth in your character's backstory or plot point?

Blood Novel Review and Ruth Miranda Interview

If you are into unique writing styles, avant garde with an emphasis on the psychology of individual characters, then Ruth Miranda may be the writer for you.

A fresh perspective on the paranormal genre is hard to discover these days but Blood by Ruth Miranda is up there with the likes of Jim Butcher.

When you think of Ruth Miranda; think the style and composition of George Eliot.

Sometimes the refreshing is found in the unexpected.

How did you get into writing?

MIRANDA: I started writing short stories as soon as I learned to string sentences together, so I've pretty much written since I was seven, eight years old. I write out of necessity to put down the stories in my head, am constantly making up stories there.

Were you always the creative sort?

MIRANDA: I've always been into stringing words together, but was hopeless at any other form of creative work, can't sing, can't draw, can't play any musical instruments. I did dance ballet for a while and wasn't too bad.

Why the topic of pretenaturals? Did you make up the term?

MIRANDA: I've always liked the idea of creatures living amongst us that are not like us, humans. That they differ from us in their genetics, their capabilities, but are as prone as we are to all that makes us who and what we are as individuals and persons. I don't think I invented the term, though, I think I've seen it around for a while.

Since the paranormal realm and its creatures are metaphors for the human condition, what does your writing say about being human?

MIRANDA: I don't use paranormal and creatures as metaphors, I use them as I may use a character of chinese descent, or african, or suomi. It's just another race, in my books. Of course, they do have powers humans don't, but I've never thought of using vampires for metaphors, for example.

BLOOD by Ruth Miranda is an intriguing coming of age story for Caius part Fey and all immortal. He struggles with events in his life that have left him mourning the loss of his fiancé and confused about his natural paranormal abilities. On the search to discover his past, Caius enters a world unlike his own: the world of vampires, witches, and Fey.

Ms. Miranda brings a new kind of reality into creation. In the same vein as Jim Butcher, Blood opens the reader into her fertile imagination. Dialogue moves the plot and characters along a path filled with suspense and intrigue. What will happen if Caius discovers his true identity? Will he confront his father? Save his brother, Marcus?

Blood is not your typical novel. Descriptive words sketch out characters and setting like a work of art. Enjoy this masterful piece of paranormal fantasy and paint your way through the chapters by the number.

Breaks and Unmatching Underwear

To the casual observer, it may look like I have my shit together. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I am a free spirit.

Sometimes I take a break in the middle of a conversation to deal with other crap for no apparent reason.  First it was my own illness. Then my estranged family thought it wise to mess with me. Now, a friend's health has got me worried.

Sometimes it is not fun to be smart.

A friend sent me a copy of her doctor's report, blood test and CT scan. Her cancer is now everywhere. Game over.

Even though I am not a doctor, I know what certain medical terminology means. If I have ever seen the word before or not. I get the jist.

My ability to understand may scare some people. Oh, well, I have got better things to do than worry about a party pooper. The results I read did scare me though. Scared me so much that I called a retired nurse friend to make sure I conveyed the test results correctly to my other friend.

I knew before I called her. I knew so much I had a meltdown in my house. Good thing I live alone these days.

Now I am in the sad and unique position to tell a friend to stop. Stop her life and get her affairs in order. To have a quick bucket list and go for it. She thinks she has about six months. I don't give her that. I say more like 60 days.

So to everyone who thinks they have time. Screw it. Live how you want to live as long as it does not harm anyone else. Take that vacation. Wear underwear that does not match your other unmentionables.

Life is too short.

So go live it.
